From USA Today bestselling author, Robert I. Katz, comes The Towering Flame, the first book in a brand new series, The Survivors.Once, long ago, the Empire of Mankind spread among the stars, but the Empire fell into civil war and anarchy, leaving every human inhabited world across the galaxy to go its own way. Today, after two thousand years of isolation, the Viceroy rules over seven nations on one long-abandoned planet. He alone possesses any vestige of the technology left behind by the vanished Empire and he uses it to rule with an iron fist in a velvet glove. But below the surface, ambitious men are struggling for power and rebellion is simmering. Terence Allen is the third son of a wealthy father. Terence is satisfied with his life. He has few responsibilities, fewer challenges and little desire to change. Terence Allen is an unlikely catalyst for rebellion, but Terence’s destiny changes the moment he sees Thierry Jorge Garcia striding toward him one night at the Summer Fair in Varanisi, the Viceroy’s city. Thierry, the heir to a long-standing military tradition, will let nothing keep him from pursuing Irina Archer, the woman he had known and loved as a young man in far-off Cathay, the woman who is now Terence Allen’s fiancée.The feud that results will have repercussions far beyond the borders of the city, as the seven nations seethe with conspiracies, rumors and strife. A war that has been brewing for over a century is coming, a war that will upend the foundations of both men’s world.

I grew up on Long Island, in a pleasant, suburban town about 30 miles from New York City. I loved to read from a very early age and graduated from Columbia in 1974 with a degree in English. Not encouraged by the job prospects for English majors at the time, I went on to medical school at Northwestern, where in addition to my medical degree, I acquired a life-long love of deep dish pizza. I did a residency in Anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian and spent most of my career at Stony Brook, where I ultimately attained the academic rank of Professor and Vice-Chairman for Administration, Department of Anesthesiology.

When I was a child, I generally read five or more books per week, and even then, I had a dim sense that I could do at least as well as many of the stories that I was reading. Finally, around 1985, with a job and a family and my first personal computer, I began writing. I quickly discovered that it was not as easy as I had imagined, and like most beginning writers, it took me many years to produce a publishable work of fiction. My first novel, Edward Maret: A Novel of the Future, came out in 2001. It won the ASA Literary Prize for 2001 and received excellent reviews from Science Fiction Chronicle, InfinityPlus, Scavenger’s Newsletter and many others.

My agent at the time urged me to write mysteries, as mysteries are supposed to have a larger readership and be easier to publish than science fiction. Since I have read almost as many mysteries as science fiction and fantasy, and since I enjoy them just as much, I had no objection to this plan. The Kurtz and Barent mystery series, Surgical Risk, The Anatomy Lesson and Seizure followed between 2002 and 2009. Reviewers have compared them favorably to Patricia Cornwell and Robin Cook and they’ve received positive reviews from The Midwest Book Review, Mystery Review Magazine, Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Lady M’s Mystery International, Mystery Scene Magazine, Library Journal and many others.

In 2014, I published a science fiction short story, “To the Ends of the Earth in the Deep Blue Sea” on Kindle for Amazon. Since then, I have made all of my previously published novels available for purchase on Kindle and now, in June, 2017 I am about to embark on a new venture. I will be publishing new novels on Kindle, the first of which is entitled The Cannibal’s Feast. It’s a science fiction story of corporate warfare in space. The next, coming out in early 2018, will be another science fiction novel tentatively entitled The City of Dust, a tale set on an abandoned world after the collapse of the First Interstellar Empire of Mankind.

“Avoid the dead cities, and even more important, avoid the mistakes that caused those cities to be dead.” This is an ominous admonition from A Child’s First Lesson Upon Entering Scholium which begins Book One in Robert I. Katz’s Sci fi/fantasy series, The Survivors.

Colonized by an advanced civilization, the world author Katz creates is one in which technology and science have been banned and looting in the dead cities can be dangerous and deadly. The seven nations of this world are ruled by an omnipotent Viceroy who enforces the rules that keep civilization in a medieval state. The tenets of this empire are guarded not only by the Viceroy but by the clergy and the Inquisitoria. The seven kingdoms are populated by fiefdoms ruled by warlords who vie for power, wealth, and status. The peasant class is left alone as they are needed to till the fields and perform other duties which form the backbone of this society.

Enter Terence Allen, the third son of Lord Allen, who is an indolent lad, born to wealth and privilege. He is engaged to Irina Archer, a girl he has knowns since childhood and daughter of Lord Malachi Archer. Their union has been sealed by a contract between the two families. Irina is, however, a headstrong young woman and takes a liking to Thierry Jorge Garcia, a nobleman from one of the other kingdoms she met years before and was enamored of. Thus, the contract is broken and Terence is told by his father to “be gracious.” Being gracious, however, is not something Terence is acquainted with and, when next he sees Irina and Garcia together at a festival dinner, he uses telekinesis (an ability he was born with but has pretty much ignored) to play a prank on them. This results in a blood feud between Terence and Garcia which may end in the young lad’s death. But the Viceroy has other plans for this young nobleman and when they are put into play, they set him off on a journey unlike any you’ve read before!

In The Towering Flame author Katz has created a fascinating world peopled by a complex and interesting cast of characters. The story is quite satisfying, but leaves the reader wanting more. I’m curious to find out who the one-eyed man that appears in the Epilogue is and guess I’ll just have to get the next book in the series to find out! Highly recommended for lovers of dystopian dramas, world-building, and sci fi/fantasy epics.

The world building is solid and it's easy to see that this isn't the author's first book. The story is compelling and kept me reading even though I'm more a fan of physical books.

I've not read any of the author's other works, but I'm definitely interested in looking for them.

One critique: Reiteration is good, in moderation, but the story can feel weighed down if you say a character's full name every two paragraphs (or less). I recommend slowing this to once every two or three pages.

In The Towering Flame, Robert I. Katz has created an intriguing world where mankind has expanded out to the stars and colonized thousands of worlds. Except now, at the time of our story, the Empire has withdrawn from the galaxy and allowed its colonies to survive on their own. In these worlds, technology is forbidden to the masses and the rulers of the planet are reminiscent of Medieval times on Earth.

We meet the hero of this story, Terence Allen, a spoiled and privileged youth, as he has just become engaged to marry Irina Archer. Also, a spoiled and privileged young woman. She has seen the world, were as Terence has not. Unbeknownst to Terence, a man she met on her journeys named Thierry Garcia has arrived to claim her as his bride.

With the ensuing quarrel, a blood feud is declared and Terence is poisoned. But not really. The Viceroy of the land has another purpose for Terence. He is renamed Blake Pierce and trained as a soldier and spy for the all-powerful Viceroy. Adventure and vengeance ensue.

The story is engaging, so much so, that I finished the book in just two sittings. Something rare for me. I highly recommend this book to lovers of science fiction and fantasy. It has shades of both. In fact, I have already started book 2 in the series, The Antiquarians Guild.

If the rest of the series is of the same level, there is much potential for a good, long bout of entertainment. I will need to check out some of Katz’s previous works.

An alternative world , similar to earth but more medieval in life. Battles with swords, horses and siege machines . One young man, Terence, who had a good lifr, not ambitious despite his talents. He learned the hard way that it is important to seek work and grow your skills.
Well written , no obvious typos . Sometimes slow, but pretty good overall .

The viceroy is ruling, their guide - an ancient book, filled with horrors outside their realm that need to be avoided at all costs.
Terry and Tierry become highly competitive for a love interest and things take a dark turn.
This story was beautifully written with the skills of a seasoned writer.
I do love Dystopia books and films, like the The Maze, Hunger Games, and more, and this story would fit in with that category perfectly, thrusting the reader from their reality into a world beyond ours. A page turner for sure and one I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Towering Flame by Robert I. Katz a superb novel, eager for the next episode!

This book was sent to me as an Advance Reader Copy against an honest and fair review.
It was my first attempt at a novel from Robert Katz.
I have been caught, if not by the begin of the story itself but by the atmosphere of the book from the start, a bit like with an adventure or Thriller film where you start feeling something is going to happen… when the plot(s) started to unfurl it proved very difficult to let the book go…
Usually it seems hard to me to relate to a world of emperor, princesses, prince’s & samurais without any relation to any year or century, in this case the author succeeded creating a catching story, a believable world and enticing novel without giving away much or anything of the era or even we are in.
We should also praise the author because beside the plot(s) , the adventure(s) , characters, the vocabulary (very rich and varied) and the writing are of a quality rarely attained nowadays in fiction novels. The fact that it is very well written made The Towering Flame even more enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The mixture of medieval and forgotten science in a society that has descended into a pre Industrial Age is fascinating. Looking forward to reading the next instalment.
