The Two Masters (Chronicles of the Half-emrys) Paperback – September 8, 2015

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

Choose the light or choose the darkness, but you cannot have both.

As a half-emrys, Einion can wield the powers of light and darkness in the mortal world. But having known only the light's purity in the immortal realm, Einion fears the dark power that leads to corruption. Despairs over his heart increase his uncertainty, and Einion is thrust on a path where he must face his worst fears to save the one he truly loves.

Rhianu, a ruthless Dark Emrys, stumbles into Einion's life only to be challenged by her versions of good and evil. Her heart is torn between power and love, between the past and the future. Familiar with betrayal, Rhianu must follow through with her master's deceptive plan--no matter what the consequences or what her heart tells her.

The Two Masters, a romantic fantasy, is the second book in the Chronicles of the Half-Emrys. This novel may be enjoyed without reading Master of Lies (Chronicles of the Half-Emrys #1).

Romantic fantasy is for you if you like a light, character driven, more traditional fantasy plot, which includes two characters who find themselves drawn to each other, even if they start out as enemies. During a character's journey to develop powers and overcome trials, romance will ensue with bits of tension. The hero or heroine will undoubtedly be fighting some inner battle that makes them bulk at the chemistry with the other character until they slay their inner demons, save the world, and realize there is room in their heart to love.

Romantic fantasy might not be for you if you prefer paranormal fantasy or epic fantasy. Romantic fantasy doesn't have the usual tropes of vampires and werewolves. Usually romantic fantasy novels are set in a high fantasy world, and an ultimate goal, besides love, is sought. Love is just the icing to the cupcake.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

What's inside The Two Masters, the second book in my Chronicles of the Half-Emrys? Immortal emrys, dragons, magical creatures, powers, light vs. darkness, good vs. evil, revenge, love, hope, forgiveness...

I created a species of immortals who can harness the power of light. My emrys. Which actually means immortal in Welsh. My half-emrys are the result of the immortals mixing their bloodline with humans. The result is the introduction of darkness along with the light. They're able to use both powers, but it becomes a constant internal struggle for them. With the added temptations of the two competing Creators, the one good and the other evil, many half-emrys find themselves stuck between two worlds.
And in the case for the two characters in this novel, their ever-balancing scale of internal light and darkness is the least of their problems.

It's a story I wrote to be a quick read, not weighed down with lots of superfluous writing, but filled with lots of tension. Written for NA audience, and it's a clean story, safe enough that a fourteen year old could read it.

What's my favorite part? The dragon humor. I have hilarious dragons. Oh, you must not forget the romantic tension. And one part always makes me cry, but you'll have to read my novel to find out.

Get ready because this book will take you on a journey through good and evil. I could not put this story down; every chance I got I read The Two Masters. You'll love the characters and be rooting for them. High emotions with playful comic relief from the dragons. Have already read the story twice! I would recommend to Young Adults looking to expand their realm of fantasy. This was a beautiful follow up to Book 1, Master of Lies. I actually read this book first before Book 1 and was not lost at all. Everything is explained in the right amount.

I had a hard time getting the characters figured out again...who was who and how did they relate to each other.

Box Set Review

I got these stories from Library Thing. The review is of my own free will and not required for receiving this book free.

I really enjoyed all three stories, but The Two Masters took me a while to get into. You can start with this book, but if you read the prequel, Fallen Emrys, things will make more sense, or it did to me. This book takes place 18 years after the prequel.
I thought the world was well thought out and descriptive. It was interesting to me as it was not a modern-day set type of world, but a bit historical.
The characters were all believable and fleshed out. There are enough twist and turns to keep them 'busy' and you interested. Good and bad personalities to cheer and jeer.
Master of Lies (book 1) and Master of Time (book 3), which I liked the best, I just liked the byplay between the characters. As I said The Two Masters took me longer to get into. This one took place 18 years after Masters of Lies… It may have been Rhianu's character that bothered me. She was painted as an evil B**** in the prior stories when she was mentioned and trying to plug her into the characters who lost her memories, maybe even then I figured it was a ruse. I put the book away for about three days, read another author's new story for her street team and came back. When I came back… within a few chapters, I was hooked again. I really enjoyed the book after the break.
I really enjoyed the books, and the last one is worth the wait. The last story Master of Time takes place right after The Two Masters ends… Think you'll enjoy the books.

This isn't the kind of book I would normally read, but found it to be well written and well paced.
I haven't read book one in this series but didn't find that to be a hindrance in following the storyline.
I found the story to be engaging and the characters well rounded. If this genre interested you then I recommend that you grab hold of a copy!

Book Review of Chronicles of the Half Emrys Book Two: The Two Masters by Lisa Rector

In Chronicles of the Half Emrys Book Two: The Two Masters, good versus evil takes a twist when the evil is challenged by memory loss, and innocence is stolen by temptation. Sometimes the lines between right and wrong are blurred by power and love.

I had the unique opportunity of reading the prequel to the Chronicles of the Half-Emrys series, which is probably something most people have not done at the time of my writing this.

As a fellow author, I was given the chance to read an advance copy. I loved it and couldn't put it down. I became a Lisa Rector fan immediately. When I was done reading the prequel I needed to read the rest of the books, so I bought all three of the main series. I have now finished Book One: Master of Lies and Book Two: The Two Masters.

This is not my usual genre. I don't normally read fantasy novels and I have never read anything with dragons in it. If I hadn't had the opportunity to read the prequel I may never have stumbled upon the rest of the series. I'm very glad I did read the books because they're great.

I told Lisa half way through my reading of Book One that these are not so much fantasy novels as they are powerful love stories. The passion between the characters is phenomenal. The passion in the prequel is even better! I can’t wait for the world to read it!

I highly recommend reading anything by Lisa Rector. I will seek her out in future reading endeavors. Great author, great series. –Julie L. Spencer

Lisa Rector is a master at writing high fantasy. And when I say that I'm coming at it from the perspective of one who enjoys Tolkien, Lewis, and Paolini. Yes, even romance girls can read outside their preferred genre.

The Two Masters, with its battles, magic lore, and dragons, is really a deep soul searching journey. The characters are forced to examine the light and darkness within. The balance can be swung back and forth with their choices. And there is always a choice. There is adventure, heartbreak, romance, and struggle. I loved everyone of her characters and found them easy to relate to.

Ms. Rector is truly master of her world. Her world building is incredible. Her ability to convey emotion is done beautifully with apt description. Her pacing impeccable. Her grammar, near flawless.

If you enjoy high fantasy, you won't be disappointed.

At the end of her blurb she says it can be read as a stand alone book, and it can. But I would encourage you to read the other books. You wouldn't want to miss such great writing!

As a cross-genre reader I probably choose fantasy least often because they're hard for me to get into. Not this one. The dynamics with Rhianu and her mother at the beginning of the story was instantly intriguing. I hate when people give away too much of a plot so I'll not go too far. This was an awesome read, with great pacing, and the writing was wonderful. I read book two having never read book one and it totally stands alone so no worries there. I never felt lost or as if I was reading too much backstory. This is a classic light vs. dark but done in the author's own way that isn't reflective of every other good vs. bad story that I've ever read or seen in a movie.
