Crazy concept, but take a dive into this read about the evian race. Compared to peon humans, evians are better at everything. They are smarter, faster, more beautiful (there are some pretty hunky romantic interests in the evian world, too), better hearing, and never get sick. They can repair their injuries, even a literal knife to the heart. There are plenty of those in this series. The evians divided themselves into regions, with each empress ruling over several countries, directing everything in the human world from politics to trade to agriculture. In these queendoms, the females are the strong rulers. Chancery and Judica are the teenage youngest daughters of empress Enora and the first book is about the events leading up to the transition of power from Chancery’s view. The second book retells some of the same events, but also explains some past actions and continuing the story forward, from Judica’s view. The third book switches back and you learn how Chancery feels about her sisters, how she grows into her unwanted role of empress, and the healing of the rift between the twins. Turns out they might both be kind and loyal souls. The teenage queen also has more than her share of suitors you will have a hard time choosing between. She’s not so great at choosing either! You are going to want to read the whole series, so save yourself the time having to go back and buy the next one by getting this box set off the bat.

Enthralling, emotional, and beautiful series! Be warned: this series will suck you in and keep your mind spinning long after you finish! Each book does an outstanding job of character development...even though each one has a different focus. The series begins with Chancery Alamecha, the almost-heir to the world's strongest (and secret) empire, following her struggles and her growth as she goes from just wanting to blend in to being ready to rule. The second book focuses on her nemesis...who happens to be her twin sister Judica. Judica was the worst of villains in the first book, but in unForgiven her story unfolds, bittersweet and haunting, until I almost liked her better than Chancery. The third book returns to Chancery, progressing the story of her quest to achieve lasting peace and avoid the world's destruction. Each one is FULL of mysteries, clues, and ends in a satisfying way—yes, the story is not over, but there is closure at the end of each. I highly recommend spending a few hours...okay, maybe days...immersing yourself in this series!

These are the first three books in the series. In the first book I thought Chancery was easy to like and her sister, Judica was easy to hate. But in the next book we get things from Judica's perspective, which is one of the things I love about this series. You think you know the story, but then learn you don't know everything. I think the author is really good at showing how her characters feel, and why they feel that way, and these characters are very layered. I recommend reading this if you like contemporary YA fantasy set in the real world.

About the author

Bridget loves her husband (every day) and all five of her kids (most days). She’s a lawyer, but does as little legal work as possible. She has three goofy horses, one very busy dog, two spoiled barn cats, two lion’s head rabbits, and more chickens than she cares to admit. She makes cookies too often, and believes they should be their own food group. In a (possibly misguided attempt) to level the scales between consumption and exertion, she kick boxes every day. So if you don’t like her books, her kids, or her cookies, maybe don’t tell her in person.
