@Robertopancake: A Story About a Boy Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Fifteen-year-old Rob Sheldon loves music and Twitter; no matter how many times his family moves, those two things never let him down. His dad is an unreliable alcoholic who lives in Florida, his mom is more interested in hitting the gym and in Rob’s five-year-old half-sister than she is in him, and as far as Rob’s concerned, his “step-douche” is just an annoying complication with a mustache and a potbelly. It’s only the existence of the luscious, sarcastic Deenie Hobbs that keeps Rob interested in his latest incarnation as a suburban Southern California teen. But their friendship quickly morphs into an uncomfortable, one-sided lust-fest, and when Deenie gets pregnant by a Neanderthal on a skateboard who goes AWOL, Rob’s left in a quandary: do his feelings for her change? Is he really up to the task of being there for her when she needs someone the most? Will her feelings for him change when she realizes he’s the only boy left standing?

It is very rare to read a realistic portrayal of a teen boy! Usually I am thrust out of the story time and time again because it is apparent a middle age woman is our teen boys mind in reality. Not with this book. @Robertopancake is fresh, honest and hilarious. The way he describes other women, skate park punks and his situation in life had me laughing constantly. He is such a likable character. There were good side characters but he really stole the show. I thought I was getting a romance between him and his buddy. Instead I got a personal growth story that touched upon some tough topics. Wow, Rob goes through a lot of ups and downs for a 15 year old. I hope the author follows up with him older and we see how his life turns out. The ending had me a little like "OH NO!" I wanted the big fairytale happily ever after. I got a realistic ending and I am dying to hear more.

I adore Rob! The author has such an ear for the teen male language and posturing. It's great to read a YA book from a male perspective too. So many hallmarks of teen angst are covered in this book, but all with sincerity, humor, and a dazzling play list. Spend time with @robertopancake. You won't regret it.

I love that this story doesn't pull any punches. If you're one of those people who hunts down political incorrectness as if you're wearing a badge, don't read @Robertopancake. If you are just itching to be offended by the slightest uncensored remark, leave this one alone. BUT, if your sense of humor has survived the rampant finger-pointing of this day and age ... If you're prepared to dive into the mind of a fifteen-year-old boy and swim around in ripe, salty, crude and authentic waters, the waves are just perfect. As a mother who raised two boys and an author who has been called out for the locker-room language, thoughts and actions of her male characters, I soooo appreciate the honesty, and realism of this book. So refreshing!

How can one NOT love Roberto?! He is what I wanted my high school boyfriend to be - endlessly loyal, with an honest, quick wit. There are many topics teens can relate to and while it's mostly upbeat, there is the reality of drama, disappointment, and confusion that all teens face. Really, I wish I knew more high schoolers to recommend this to, but any adult would be just as entertained.

what I loved so much about @robertopancake... It's like a modern day 'Are you there God, it's me Margret'. Even though it's from a boy's pov, all teenage girls and boys should read it.

I loved the character, the storyline, everything about this book. I didn't want it to end. I am sad it's over.

There's so many details that you never have to wonder anything, great story, I love the dynamic between all the characters but Rob is the perfect window into a boys mind and how he acts, would recommend to everyone because the story in general is amazing but you can understand all the emotions that the characters are feeling because they are very real topics and things people go through, I haven't read anything in a while but picking up this book made me want to start reading for fun again, didn't want it to end.

If you only read one book between now and the new year, this is it. Life's fantacies and realities told through the mind of a teenage BOY. How refreshing is that? Reed used Twitter to help Roberto express himself. What a unique prospective he took to help this young man deal with the things that life was throwing at Roberto. I had to stop periodically and let what was happening to Roberto absorb into my brain. Real realistic stuff. Some of it funny, some of it not so much. But, I do think Reed captured a young man's thoughts accurately and that can help us understand today's male teen a little better.
