Magic Slays: Kate Daniels, Book 5 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 7,316 ratings

Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job. She may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she's still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be - now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate's mate.

So when Atlanta's premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it - fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price.

Magic Slays by Ilona AndrewsKate Daniels series #5. Paranormal, dark urban fantasy. After quitting the Order of Merciful Aid, Kate is having problems starting her own business. When Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead offers Kate the job of finding a rampant vampire on the loose, she’s ready to take on the task. Of course, there is more going on than she was told.Deadly stakes.Kate’s adopted daughter keeps running away from school. She wants to be where Kate is. And while Kate agrees to keep her home now, the war between Magic and technology is not a great place to be. Kate has to call on all her Magic to try to save her.Nail-biting suspense. Kate is bumbling in her mothering skills and even with some of her magic and her new “court” but she pulls out everything in the ending of this book.Plenty of war and new husband issues but it was the Julie parts that pulled me in and will keep me reading.

This is the fifth book in the Kate Daniels series by the writing team that is Ilona Andrews. I pre-ordered it because I had to read it right away! I just love this series so much. This was a great book with a lot going on in it; we even get to learn more about Kate's elusive mother. This is definitely not a stand alone book, so go back and read the previous books in the series first if you haven't.

After being booted from the Order, Kate is trying to set up her own investigation company...but business isn't exactly booming. Then suddenly Kate gets a call from Atlanta's Master of the Dead that a rogue vampire is headed her way. Kate races to assist but things aren't happening like they should; something is nullifying the Master's control over his vamps. On the heels of this she gets another call from the Red Guard they want her to chase down a researcher and his experimental device. The catch is this device is somehow wrapped up with a secret cult and could possibly destroy Atlanta. To add to the mess Kate is trying to keep her relationship with Curran working and then finds out that her ward, Julie, has run away from school...again.

This is the first time I read the book in this series rather than listening to it on audio book. To be honest I think I like listening to them on audio book a bit better because the audio books are just so well done.

There is a lot going on throughout this book, more than in previous books. There are a lot of different storylines pulling Kate in different directions; although by the end of it all the storylines come together nicely, if maybe just a bit too conveniently. I know previous reviewers have mentioned that the timing of tech and magic waves are just a bit too convinient and maybe a bit contrived, and I have to say I agree.

Kate and Curran are finally sharing their feelings and trying to make their complicated relationship work. Kate inherits a new minion, a bouda who is causing trouble for Miss Bea is assigned to Kate as punishment, and he is an entertaining character.

One of the favorite parts of the book is where Kate visits the witch and learns more about her mother, her father, and her past in general. It was wonderful to learn more about Kate's history. There were a lot of awesome action scenes throughout the book and they are well done as usual. There is some humor throughout the book, although not as much as in previous books, still I laughed outloud a few times.

I did miss the fact that Jim wasn't in the book much and Julie, although she is in the story a lot, doesn't get much oppotunity to talk back to Kate. This book was a bit different than previous books because of all of the twisting and complexity of the plot, it seems like a bit of a transition book...like maybe we are finally gearing up for Kate to take on her father Roland. The book ends well and completes the story well, but throws another little twist at the reader right at the end.

Overall it was an excellent addition to the series. I think if you enjoy this series you will love it. Not a book to start the series on, too many things are happening for that. I enjoyed learning more about Kate's past and am eager to see what the next installment in this series throws at us.

before I get into my actual review of this story I need to explain some things :) I actually already finished the whole series and I may have binge read them, so all of the installments may or may not got blurred together in my mind… ;) but hey, I will do my best to separate them at least a little bit :) it happened, because I read this series during a two month long period of time when I struggled with a lot of changes in my personal and professional life, so I read a lot, cause I needed something to relax, but at the same time I was in no mood to write any reviews… so here we are today, when I am doing my best to catch up on those :)

Before we get into my thoughts and feelings about this particular installment, here are a few things that are true about all of them and that you can read without any fear of spoilers :)

#1 this series is absolutely phenomenal and you all need to read it if you haven’t yet :) I blew through all of the stories in it in record time, cause I was unable to put them down and read something else :)

#2 the whole series follow Kate, the main character, and tells one big story… so even though each installment revolves around a smaller event / issue, I highly encourage you to read them all in order, including the novellas and side books that happen along the way, because they all bring something extra to your overall experience :) the reading order of all those stories can be easily found on Goodreads if you look for the series Kate Daniels :) I read them all in that order, as it was recommended to me by my good friend who already finished it, and I am very happy I did that :) of course I can’t force you to listen to me, I’m no #BookPolice ;) it’s just a friendly suggestion ;)

#3 a few more words about the series in general :) it’s a paranormal / urban fantasy story, set in an alternate version of our world… in it, there are magic waves that crash over the world, making basically all technology useless for some time… because it’s impossible to predict when exactly they will come and go, it alters the way people live… of course, with magic came all sort of gifts and talents… not to mention magical creatures :) we definitely have vampires and necromancers of some sort who control them, shapeshifters who can change into all sorts of animals, not to mention the fact that we get to see magical influences and practitioners from very different belief systems… it’s a lot to explain and we don’t have that much time to get into all the details right now :) just know it’s phenomenal :) each book is action packed, fast paced and full of surprising twists and turns… I can’t even begin to count the number of times when I gasped in shock because the plot went in a completely different way than I anticipated :) once you get to know this world and these characters, you will be completely hooked… and speaking of characters… ;)

#4 diverse and interesting characters are one of the main reasons why I love this series so much :) not only the main one, Kate, goes through a pretty spectacular character development arch throughout the whole series, but along the way we keep meeting new ones… and before you know what happened, you have a whole bunch of people you love and with each book you are quietly chanting “don’t kill any of them, don’t kill any of them” as if that might change some outcomes :) obviously I won’t name anyone right here, because a lot of them might come as a surprise to you… what I will say is that it will be a pleasure to re-read those books again soon, knowing how certain characters end up… that’s all I’m gonna say ;)

#5 DO NOT READ THE REST OF THIS REVIEW if you are not caught up on the previous stories… I will be mentioning people and events from previous books next, because I cannot possibly write more about my feelings without them, and you will be spoiled about some major surprising turns… I won’t spoil anything when it comes to the book I am currently reviewing, but everything that happened before is fair game :) you’ve been warned ;)

truth be told this is one of the installments in this series that I remember less about… and it’s not that it wasn’t as good as the rest of them… it’s solely because I flew through it so fast that I just can’t recall many details… ;) this is the first book where Kate has her own business, as in a sort of Private Investigator thing, because she’s no longer part of the Order :) and it’s not easy to keep it open… so Kate tends to take cases no one else wants to take… one day she is approached by someone she met before and she’s asked to find a missing person… and his device… and of course, it’s yet another story packed with action and surprises that will keep you at the edge of your seat :)

A book filled with emotion, and filled with even more action, as Atlanta might be on the verge of collapse, with Kate, Curran, and their allies fighting to save their city and everyone in it from a terrible fate.

Worth every page read, every held breath, every curse word I might have said.

Amazing book, again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un must have pour tout fan de Bit-lit
Reviewed in France on November 4, 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Sighs contentedly

For me the only disappointment is that I finished it so quickly (but this is my fault, if you will refuse to break except to eat, you will finish it quickly!). I absolutely adore the Kate Daniels series, more than Mercy Thompson, Cassandra Palmer or The Hollows series, more even than the Fever series and Cat and bones! At first I remembered merely enjoying it, but as the plot and world building develop and Kate begins to interact with Curran more, it just gets better and better. If you haven't read the first books go read them now! (Seriously, go, what could be more exciting then a post-apocalyptic Atlanta, where magic comes and goes in waves leaving behind all sorts of problems for people like Kate to deal with on behalf of the people who cant, there are shifters, The People, who pilot undead vampires, exciting mystical creatures and lots of ass-kicking by a heroine who has feelings and limitations) From here on there are spoilers!
I absolutely adored the last book because Kate finally got together with Curran (though not before kicking him in the head for being an idiot) and we got to see a softer side of her, I would say more vulnerable but she's only emotionally vulnerable, she's still perfectly willing and perhaps even more motivated to bring a whole world of pain to those who wish harm upon those near and dear to her. This book had a lovely well developed plot and as always there were multiple occasions where I was literally snorting with laughter (it's not an attractive trait, but its a price I am willing to pay for enjoying such a fun book). What's more we get to see Kate and Curran's relationships mature, to see Kate struggle with doubts and to see a bit of the romantic side of the aggressive over-protective Curran, it's heart warming but also real in that Curran's character hasn't changed, he's by no means gone soft, we just see more of the side of him that has often been hinted at by some of his previous actions.
I loved that we got to see a bit of everyone in this book, shifters, the people (who pilot undead vampires) witches, preists of various dark-gods, human fanatics, the lot, it is so exciting and well written and I feel so personally involved with these books, I cannot recommend them enough.
