After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

For anyone that’s ever loved Pride and Prejudice, this one’s for you. Lizzie was such a relatable protagonist. I loved her spunk and sweet personality, and watching her try and figure out what her “Mr Darcy” would be was an enjoyable adventure. She is torn between two men, one who is a dream come true, and the other who makes her think of different dreams. All I can say is I adored one of them and loved each and every interaction between them. The ending was my favorite, although I would have absolutely loved an epilogue. Such a great read!

We can all relate to sixteen yr old Elizabeth when it comes to Pride and Prejudice and Mr. Darcy. I think at one time or another he has become our dream. Our book boyfriend. In her case book boyfriend. Where ours ends and hers continues is that for Elizabeth she took this dream and wanted it to be her ideal man. A Matthew MacFayden double Mr. Darcy personality in her world. That is what she held out for her teenage and adult life. She gave no guy a chance. No guy until her friend forces her hand. When this happens she begins to falter. Why? Because the charismatic, sweet, adorable, kind and wonderful Chad is in her life. Chad makes her start to see that maybe her dream should be altered. She starts to feel for him despite all her stubbornness not to. But Elizabeth becomes a complete doof when Matt Dawson walks into the bank and into her life. This is the Mr. Darcy in her dreams or so she thinks. There are parallels with the movie to. Eerily to many parallels. Matt is pompous but can be kind. He has a family and friends that look down on Elizabeth but at first he doesn't fight them. He only decides he wants Elizabeth more seriously when he finds out about Chad. He manipulates at times but underneath he can be kind. Just his way he grew up takes over too often. Elizabeth is sweet and very talented she just had this ideal in her head and didn't want to give it up.

Thank the heavens she began to see all sides of the coins and realized that dreams should be changed. I think it was when she was ill and it was Chad who was there for her. Or at her best friends wedding rehearsal when she saw love made everyone deliriously happy. She wasn't happy but was when she was with Chad.

A really sweet look at a woman who takes a dream of Mr.Darcy and goes to far only to realize that dreams can change. Love makes you want to change your idealization of what you want. Kindness makes you see things differently. A clean sweet romance where the great guy never gives up hope and shows the girl that love is what matters not a idealization.

As author Karey White shows us in her delightful MY OWN MR. DARCY, it isn't always easy trading in our schoolgirl illusions for grownup reality. When Lizzie is a young teen, her mother drags her to a screening of the movie PRIDE & PREJUDICE. From that moment on, she is determined to find her own flesh and blood version of Mr. Darcy. At first, her friends and family accept this odd obsession with amusement and a little head scratching. Over time, however, it becomes clear to everyone but Lizzie that this fantasy is stifling her. Then, just when she meets Chad, a cheerful, affectionate schoolteacher who makes her question the path she's set for herself, Mr. Darcy walks into the bank where she works. What can she do? Handsome, standoffish, and wealthy--Matt is exactly what Lizzie's been waiting for. Isn't he?

The author did a great job with her characters. It would have been easy to make Lizzie as silly as her Darcy dream. Instead she's bright and creative and struggling to grow both personally and professionally. Though there are times when we want to take her by the shoulders and give her a good shake, we can't help but like her. I also enjoyed the level of sensory detail White provided--her interiors, clothing, food--it made the scenes vivid...almost like watching a film.

Readers who like their romance on the spicy side might find this book tame fare. MY OWN MR. DARCY focuses on the emotional nuances of male-female relationships rather than on the physical. This isn't an issue for Jane Austen fans. We're used to leisurely courtships. Another benefit is that there's more room for true character development in White's book than you find in more erotic works. After reading this book, I have the sense that I could run into Lizzie, Janessa, Meg, Matt or Chad in a coffee shop and recognize them right away.

Overall, I'd say that MY MR. DARCY is for people who appreciate carefully crafted characters, realistic moral dilemmas, and scenes that make you want to linger long after you should have turned the page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story!

A delightful story! This is a very well-written novel with just enough Pride and Prejudice references in it to satisfy fans of Jane Austen, but not so much that it feels in any way repetitious. I loved all the characters from Elizabeth to her best friend, Janessa. The author set the story up in such a way that one, like Elizabeth, could be torn between two charming men, Matt and Chad. This story also had well developed references which would hold the interest of those maybe wondering how to get their chosen career off the ground and/or how to develop or expand small businesses, and enough detail about extended families to keep interest up and make the characters memorable. Loved the cover too. Thanks Karey White for a good read.
I would recommend it for all ages from young teens to 90 year olds.

A novel concept with the idea from the original woven in so beautifully, it makes a great story. We all love Mr Darcy, but there's just the one, the original. An yet Karey White does the impossible - she brings him alive in a different way.

A brilliant story which has put a touch of Jane Austen in to the mix. The story is constantly moving so you don't get bored and has a good flow. Its a shame the story ended... I'd love to see what happens to them.
