About this ebook

“A gunslinger adventure with good, clean fun!”

With a stolen experimental starship and a pair of advanced synthetic limbs, he’s not your average bounty hunter.

When he accepted the job on a backwater planet, Hunter thought it would be easy. He and his partner just had to track down a missing researcher. But when they find her, she’s fled a quarter of the way around the massive ring of twenty-seven gates and Hunter realizes all is not as he was told.

That simple realization, and Hunter’s drive for retribution, kick off a series of adventures leading to the most important discovery since the fall of the Gate Age—and put him in direct confrontation with the corp he’s been running from for the past 10 revolutions.

Set in a far distant future, The 28th Gate is a series of tales that will appeal of fans of space marines, space fleets, and military hard science fiction. The series consists of eight volumes spread across four seasons telling the story of Hunter’s struggles against the AAA corporation that created him. Each volume contains six episodic novelettes each with the action, character, and plotting of a complete story all crammed into an espresso-like package, while each season chronicles a different arc in the overall epic.

Definitely an enjoyable read, with it's episodic layout, I'm reminded of Cowboy Bebop, which makes it even more enjoyable. The in depth explanations of every firearm, and the varieties of them, make me wish I could own a few (all.) The character development, and world building, go along well with the episodic nature as well, slowly filling in more of the details each episode. If I had to give criticism, it would be that the novella length of each episode doesn't allow enough time for build up, so some of the more dangerous situations end up resolved much to quickly, or easily. Already purchased Volume 2.

I'm not going to deny that finding a good indie author to read is hard. You have to wade through a lot of bad stories to get to the good ones. And this is one of the good ones. This author walks a fine line between soft and hard sci-fi. I never felt like he was giving too many facts or not enough. At first I wasn't digging the story but as I read more it got much better. I like the episodic story method. Each episode genuinely feels like a forty five minute episode. Each episode is wrap up by the end but the continuity remains through the entire volume telling an overreaching story. I think a strong point in the story is the character development. At first I didn't like Hunter all that much but when I made it to Katherine Episode 2 Hunter was much more than he seems. I have hard time liking all the characters in a story but in this one, I love them all. The chemistry between each character is very well thought out. The crew has a great family feel to it. Everyone watches out for each other. I love the blending of the cyberpunk and space western genre as well. I can't wait to read more and look forward Hunter and his adventures.

Excellent book ! Great storyline, compelling characters. I downloaded the first Volume for free. I normally don't read space sci-fi, but I figured free so it was worth a shot. But after having read it, I can't believe they're not charging to download. I was very impressed. Upon finishing the first volume, I immediately bought Volumes II, III, and IV. I took a break after reading the 2nd volume to write this review - apologies for the brevity, but I'm in a hurry to begin #3. This series and Mr. Dimond (the author) are definitely worth watching from now on out.
