Blood Ex Libris Paperback – May 9, 2020
Blood, passion, and swords. And don’t forget flamethrowers. And one librarian, in over her head.
How did I get here: covered in blood and holding a sword I can’t use?
It all started when the dark and mysterious stranger showed up at my children’s reading hour. Of course I noticed him. I’d been single (and bored) for longer than I care to admit. Me, I’m Anushka (Noosh) Rosetti, head librarian.
He turned out to be a vampire. And not just any vampire: Vlad Dracula. Although he goes by another name these days, and he says he’s changed his violent ways. He definitely seemed more of a lover than a fighter. At first.
In a whirlwind of passion and blood-drinking, I made a crucial but impulsive decision: share blood with him a third time, and give up normal human society forever, making my life among the “am’r”—that’s what the vampires call themselves.
The whirlwind just keeps spinning faster. Before I know it, I’m at an am’r summit meeting—and then, abducted by Vlad’s oldest enemy. He’s hoping to use me to undo all of my lover and my new family’s plans to save am’r society from tearing itself apart.
I thought I was just going to archive some ancient books, but somehow I have to keep myself from being used as a pawn by the craziest bad guy ever, escape back to the good guys (and I’m not sure how “good” they really are) across a desert (I don’t even know what country I’m in!) and not be killed in the process. I don’t know how I will survive the next five minutes, never mind save my beloved’s life, too….
Blood Ex Libris is the first book in a brand new, dark urban fantasy series mixing horror, history, and blood-soaked romance featuring a snarky librarian heroine, a sensual but complex hero in the story of a life that unfolds in unexpected ways from humdrum to death-defying thrills, from Middle America to the middle of an unknown desert, surrounded by sword-fighting, explosions, and the ultimate drama of immortals meeting death.
Note: This book contains some VERY steamy scenes. If that’s not your thing, you may reconsider reading this story.

Thomas Roche, Stoker Award Finalist, Author of The Panama Laugh
"Blood Ex Libris delivers, with a richly detailed exploration of the inner struggles between powers within the vampire world [...] Pick it up for the sexy, dangerous fun, devour it for the fast-moving storyline, and reflect on it for a long time to come for the genuine scholarship and creativity. I highly recommend Blood Ex Libris and I can't wait for the next volume in the story!"
Lars D. H. Hedbor, author of Tales From A Revolution series
"This is a story that HAD 2 happen. If not for POSTERITY-then for the hella ALLEGORY it is for today's world. This is-for ME at least-VAMPIRE PULP FICTION mixxed wit smoove Pop Cultural delivery frum a writer hoo has her finga on the Pulse of what Pops (read all three books in the series to git the full juice). Meanwhile, going forward, Im looking for RAVEN BELASCO to be a Writer to be reckoned wit. The woman has a complete understanding of how to translate words into psychologically-moving symbols that disrupts genres. And Im heah for it."

About the author
Raven Belasco has been fascinated by vampires since she was 12 years old. You probably shouldn’t let 12-year-olds read Stoker’s Dracula, but Raven grew up in a house where, if she could get the book off the shelf, she could read it. Anyway, the bloody seeds were planted both for her to become a fan of the paranormal, and a verbose writer. ;)
Raven also grew up in a small town in Massachusetts, with her backyard mostly comprised of a cemetery filled with graves ranging from the late 1600s through 1800s. If spending your childhood playing on old graves doesn’t prepare you for a career writing about the (un)dead, then probably nothing will.
Continuing in this vein (puns are not optional; sorry—not sorry!) Raven danced and performed for a number of years at the (in)famous ManRay nightclub in Cambridge. In college, she discovered that the nickname bestowed upon her on campus was Queen of the Children of the Night. She was not dismayed by this fact.
For someone who spends so much of her time thinking about blood and violent deaths, Raven actually likes a lot of very life-affirming things: long walks with her dog in the woods, cooking and baking, and yoga. Just to keep things spooky, she still loves heading out to the local goth night at the club for dancing to songs about vampires and other things that go bumpa-bumpa-bumpa in the night.
Raven writes not just for her own pleasure, but to make books that give any-and-everybody an enjoyable escape, and to delight fellow geeks with weird historical details and multi-level puns. She wants to pay forward the joy that books have brought her through tough times or otherwise boring waiting-rooms. Please enjoy her words—and feel free to write in and let her know, or ask questions. Fans are the bestest!

I, like many across the world, have been overwhelmed with a deep life-pervading sorrow over the tragedies and misfortunes befallen so many souls during the COVID-19 pandemic. My sadness has interfered with my reading and writing goals, however, this is nothing in comparison to the hardship and suffering of those who lost loved ones, jobs, homes, the list is unending.
Aside from helping in ways that I am able just as I find so many others do, it seems we all look to the creative people in our society to provide us with distractions in film, books, tv, art, music or, we have busied ourselves with new and old information pursuits.
I have personally retreated to the worlds of sexy, hot, irresistible vampires. I began with reading J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series for the first time. I read all 23+ books back-to-back and then went on to read through the Midnight Breed Series of Lara Adrian. As anyone who loves romance, paranormal romance, gorgeous, conflicted, over-heated Alpha males or vampires know, these authors have taken readers into whole new worlds and
rewritten the entire lore and lure of the vampire.
Now here comes Ms. Belasco and she combines the uber-romantic, beautifully dangerous mysterious Alpha male vampire theme with the legend and history of Vlad Dracula from Romania.
Our heroine who narrates her story, her amazing adventure really, is masterfully relatable, truly funny, and the perfect librarian "geek" girl. Through her perspective we as humans are experiencing this other being and their world. While the plot holds your interest for its basic intrigue and action elements, the character development of our heroine is central.
This author sets the mood by careful description of the scenes from around the world, often using the witticisms of the heroine. For example, one underground meeting place is referred to by our heroine as the "Rave" cave. With the modern freshness of American colloquialisms and some Library Science techno-speak, we also are treated to characters uttering phrases in Romanian, Arabic, even French. I loved the occasional obscure book or document reference. These details support the believability of the important geeky element in our heroine's character. No small feat for the author.
All of these elements described combine in a fluid, highly readable engaging writing style that flows. IOW You don't need to worry about getting every obscure reference but when you recognize a few it's a pleasurable bonus!
My only slightly negative, if not neutral, observation is that I thought the Epilogue was superfluous to the ending.
This truly is a lush, sexy vampire story. It is well written and infinitely satisfying. Any lover of the vampire Alpha male lover will want more as I am eager to read the next book in what I believe will be a trilogy!
Congratultions, Raven Belasco! Brava!
Favorite quote:
"Indeed, part of our job, part of our very selves, is our thankless toil, quietly saving culture and society from the barbarians at our doors. Although nowadays, “barbarians” are lowest-common-denominator shows and social media influencers, a society in which educating kids comes dead last in priorities and science is seen as the enemy, and whacked-out ideologists and fanatics want to ban knowledge and burn books. We are the invisible organizers who quietly save the stacks of human knowledge while the past, present, and future Romes burn. We do not get capes or costumes of spandex. We do not find ourselves starring in the sorts of novels we usually shelve in the romantic fiction section."
She was so immature and she never took into account
how he was attempting to bridge a species together and she was a big part of it...
I've been every kind of librarian one can be without a library science degree (corporate, public, academic, rare books). But... I haven't been *this* kind of librarian. I haven't been a librarian FOR VAMPIRES.
There were so many aspects of the novel I enjoyed. The strong sense of character for the narrator and her vampire lover. The breadth of backstory here for both the lead, Noosh (Anushka), and the various vampires, which indicated a great deal of historical and linguistic research. How funny it was. The steamy erotica. And finally, the fearless dive into gore. That research had been done, as well.
I especially appreciate the Noosh's librarian compulsion to catalogue, organize, and read all available printed material, regardless if it belongs to vampire or human (but let's face it - a vampire who has been around for hundreds of years *would* likely have a jawdropping collection of primary sources), and her palpable delight in savoring all such materials.
I really enjoyed this book. And I am already looking forward to the sequel!
This book was a wonderful distraction to the real drama playing out in our world today. The writing is crisp and edgy, and the plot is a real page-turner. The writing in English is refreshingly erudite, and the details are well-researched from how to permanently dispatch a vampire, to in-depth explanations of librarianship and archival craft. The writer displays an amazing faculty with language - English, yes, but she deftly wields at least six other languages as well, all woven seamlessly into the dialog including Arabic, Turkish, Romanian, Hebrew, Japanese and French. The author has built a whole new framework for Vampiric lore that would do Anne Rice proud, with a whole new language (am'r-ic) to explore. The dialog is effortless; the plot, fast-paced and tons of fun. I've already pre-ordered Book 2.
Not YA. Contains some graphic sex and violence, well written, but for adults.

The first half is a raunchy story of vampire love, while the second half is about a civil war and there's not a single set scene. Well, I suppose technically there is one but it's very, very different to the first half.
Both halves are well written and I enjoyed the whole thing but I am still wondering how they fit together. I have bought book 2, so we shall see.
