Back in 2011, as my family and I waited in line at a local fire hall during a Halloween event, I watched a little girl wilt like a flower as she observed the scary house she was about to enter at the end of the line. After her parents tried to comfort her to no avail, a young fireman approached and successfully calmed the girl. Seeing the transformation in her from the man's tender words inspired me to write about such a character. It was miraculous to me how a total stranger could quell an innocent girls' fears, and as such, Denise Little was born.
She Only Speaks to Butterflies takes place in a small town in Arkansas, where a young mother, Sherry, loses her husband suddenly in a freak accident that her daughter Denise witnesses, leaving the preschooler with a form of post-traumatic stress disorder that robs her of speech.Writing about living in a small town is something I've always wanted to do, and this story seemed so fitting for that. This book was originally categorized as a christian romance, but it is so much more than that. It is a story about all types of love, but moreover, it is a story about transformation from love.
