A Buccaneer's Deal : A Clean & Wholesome Romance (Gentlemen of the Coast Book 3) Kindle Edition
A pirate is haunting the coast of New Spain…
Emma Montego is sure she's safe within Pensacola's protected harbor even if she feels trapped in her role as a nobleman's daughter. When a forbidden midnight walk along the shore goes awry, Emma must choose between respecting everything her birth father has done for her or making a deal with a devil in disguise.
Phillip Oakley has slipped unnoticed in and out of Pensacola for years until the alluring American-born daughter of a Spanish don crosses his path. If she recognizes him, his swashbuckling days as the infamous Captain Redbird are over, so only a deal will do.
Can Phillip make a deal with Emma that she'll keep? Or will the little señorita ruin everything with a new proposal that costs his heart?
This novel is a stand-alone historical romance with echoes of North American history, the American Revolution, West Indies piracy, and Regency era charm.

★★★★★ "I was surprisingly impressed with how deeply this novel drew me in. Ms. Thorne's words painted a visual feast for the mind. I don't usually adore book series, but I would love to read about more of these characters. -Momofsix; Amazon Review
★★★★★ "...romance, intrigue, suspense, and even some pirates! I highly recommend! -Lindseyandrick; Amazon Review
From the Inside Flap
"If we have," volleyed Mr. Oakley, in a voice changed from charming to chilling, "than I am sure you will not mention it. To anyone."
Emma forced herself not to visibly shiver. "I will mention it to anyone I see fit," she retorted.
His handsome, rugged face became menacing. "My business is my own," he uttered in a threatening tone, "and I see no reason for you to mention we bumped into one another outside your courtyard." He hesitated, and before Emma could respond, added, "unless you wish me to tell your father we rendezvous often along the midnight shore and with you in your nightdress."
Her mouth gaped at his implications. "How dare you even suggest such a thing. I am not that sort."
"Perhaps," he rasped in a more confident tone, "but who would not believe it when all of Pensacola wonders why the pretty Señorita Montego has not yet wed?"
Emma squeezed her fingers as her cheeks flamed. "Because there is no one who prefers me over Don Marcos!" She wondered at once why she said it. Mr. Oakley did not need to know she understood that any man who condescended to marry her was only interested in the don's power and wealth, not a half-Spaniard woman. She choked down the fear pooling in her throat. "Why I am unwed is none of your affair, and you have no right skulking along the shore frightening anyone out for a walk."
"I thought you were in trouble," Mr. Oakley explained in a dry tone, "but perhaps you had a clandestine meeting with another gentleman."
"You are hardly a gentleman," Emma snapped. "I was trying to find seashells. It was hot--"
"In the dark? All alone?"
"Most people sleep at night," she retorted. "Except for--"
"Except for naughty señoritas who sneak out of their courtyards."

How it started:
It actually began with Pippi Longstocking. Reading has always been my escape and writing quickly followed. I learned early I was better with words than numbers, and after receiving a typewriter for high school graduation, my dreams took off. I finished two awkward manuscripts before I wrote my third and found a publisher. The Privateer was a pirate adventure, and it's still my favorite story. All of my books feature elements of nature along with heroines who have to find courage and grow--because we all do. In 2020, my first book with Harlequin was released.
How I do it:
Writing is a balancing act when you're a woman, mother, and full-time homemaker. In the early years, I wrote late into the night while the family slept. I now write full time. I get started in the mornings after exercise, breakfast, and some scripture study. Once in the office, I hit my sales stats first and peek at Facebook, then I close everything down and put in 2 to 4 hours depending on my word count goals. Some years I plan a half-dozen books, others just a few. For me, writing is my world, but my people are my life. Family and close friends always come first. Sometimes words have to wait.
How I'm inspired:
My first memory of being starstruck was watching Robin Hood on an old black and white television. It was the first time I understood something magical can happen between a good man and woman, especially if bad guys and adventure lie in wait. From there it was Peter Pan and Agatha Christie then Miss Austen and Tolkien. I am the world's biggest romantic although I don't show it... I have to write it down. History, travel, books, and film are my biggest inspirations. Whenever I feel stuck or burned out, I find a great romantic series to watch or pull out my favorite movies. With all of the wonderful art around us in the world, a little down time with it always helps the imagination take off.

Book 3 in Danielle Thorne's wonderful Gentlemen of the Coast series is a 13 chapter novella, but it's not short on excitement, adventure or romance.
Emma is the daughter of an Irish working-class mother & Spanish noble father. She grew up in Charleston working as a family servant. When she turned 17, the Don sent for her to live with him in Pensacola. The story begins 5 years after that.
Emma feels no love from her father, & she little enjoys the life of a lady, especially since technically, she's not, & people are only interested in her as a path to her father's rank & wealth, but she has come to love Pensacola.
She's horrified, then, to learn that the Don intends to send her to live in Spain where she knows no one & knows his family won't be welcoming of an illegitimate sibling. Having previously encountered Phillip on the beach, and deducing that he's an infamous pirate, she tries to work out a way for him to help her escape & return to Charleston. She discovers that's far more complicated - and dangerous - than she anticipated.
The story is immersive, the characters are sympathetic, & the development is done well enough to balance the romantic with the realistic creditably. There were a few plot points that I would have liked to have answered, mainly with the resolution & the Don near the end, but I totally loved the story from beginning to end.
I've enjoyed the whole series, and can't help but hope that there will be more!
*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic
*Religion: very minor & generic, a few mentions of Catholics & attending Mass, one of the characters is a sort of "swamp witch" (essentially a soothsayer) & many of the sailors are superstitious
My thoughts on this book:
• The suspenseful opening of the novel caught my interest right away. I could sense the apprehension in the night air. See the coastal shoreline and feel the evening breeze across my face. All painted with the author's words.
• This story made me consider how insidious revenge is. If left to fester, lives can be ruined. The only cure is forgiveness.
• The author painted a crystal clear picture of Pensacola, La Florida, with her words. I could envision this Spanish colonial seaport.
• There were many secondary players in this novel. They were varied, well developed, interesting, and added depth to the storyline.
• The story flowed smoothly and progressed at a perfect rate.
• This historical novel had adventure and romance. It was a clean read.
• The storyline had some twists and turns which made the story interesting.
I was given an advance copy of this book. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I highly recommend this novel and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
My morning brain: Why did you stay up for hours reading last night? You only got 4 1/2 hours of sleep!
My morning brain is smarter but my reading brain was having too much fun reading about the buccaneer's deal. I enjoyed Emma and Phillip. They were kinda fun together even though they don't start off on the best of terms. I felt sorry for Emma. I think she didn't understand her situation well enough and assumed that no one wanted her when that wasn't necessarily the case. It was lovely to see her realize otherwise. And Phillip's story was one of redemption thanks to the influence of Emma. Usually a pirate isn't the good guy and I don't generally want to root for the person that is living his life wrong but the author made Phillip very likable and then found a way for him to be redeemed so it was all good. There were little surprises along the way that I didn't see coming that made me wonder how that particular situation was going to get fixed but they were fixed in the end.
Enjoyable read in a political and geographical setting that I'm not very familiar with so that made it interesting historically as well.
No sex, language or violence
*I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Being an author myself, I'm thrilled when I find a book that keeps me interested all the way to the end, and this story did. I hated to stop reading when I had to.
Some people may think the romance was quick, but in fiction that's the way it goes. You don't want to draw everything out and bore your reader's. The characters were fun.
Now I'm looking forward to the next Thorne pirate tale that I haven't read.
