“Rosen paints a vivid picture of a family torn apart then shows us what true family means.” –Pamela Taylor, author of the Second Son Chronicles

In 1915, jealous, bitter Rebecca Roth cuts all ties with her life-long friends, the Pearls. Eight years later, Rebecca’s son and young Lena Pearl begin keeping company in secret. Rebecca agrees to a truce when the couple marries. But the truce is fragile. Rebecca’s resentments run deep.

In 2010, Carolyn Lee, fitness instructor and amateur photographer, must come to grips with the fact that her mother’s imminent death will leave her alone in the world. While preparing her childhood home for sale, she realizes for the first time that her mother’s antique brooch is identical to the one pinned to the lady’s dress in the painting hanging above the fireplace. Coincidence or connection? Carolyn is determined to find out. What she discovers has the potential to tear lives apart or to bring her the closeness and comfort she longs for. It all depends on how she handles her newfound knowledge.

The Disharmony of SilenceLinda RosenBlack Rose Writing, Mar 5, 2020296 pagesCultural Family Story, Jewish, GenealogyProvided by publisher via NetGalley⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌙The cover doesn’t really look like much initially. The bow doesn’t look like much of a bow and you really can’t see too much of the cameo. And the title doesn’t really stand out on the white lace background. So, I wasn’t too impressed with the cover. The story inside wasn’t disappointing, though. I really had no idea what to expect. I didn’t read the blurb before starting to read it and I had forgotten what it was supposed to be about. So, I went into it with no expectations of any kind. I read it in one day, mostly while waiting for my car to be done at the dealership.Carolyn’s mother is getting older and has dementia. Then she dies. There is no other family, so Carolyn is alone except for one cousin who doesn’t live near her. She is Jewish and this is important as so much of her growing up had focused around the Jewish traditions, the foods and holy days, the family gatherings and such. Carolyn has to clean out her mother’s house to sell it and there is a painting of a woman wearing a cameo which is the same as her mother’s cameo. This painting has always been special to Carolyn, but she really doesn’t have room for it in her own home and it doesn’t fit in with her style. So she goes looking for the artist thinking she might return it to her and ask why the cameo is the same as her mother’s cameo. Perhaps there is a connection.Carolyn connects with Kate, the painter and they actually become friends after some phone calls and then Carolyn visits Kate to return the painting. Carolyn brings up the idea of genealogy, but Kate wants nothing to do with her ancestors. It makes her a bit grumpy, in fact. So they don’t go into the idea of a connection between the painting and the cameo.Except Carolyn is really lonely and curious. She looks into her family and Kate’s family and finds more than she expects. But she can’t find a way to bring it up to Kate, whose health is shaky.Family and friends get involved and have opinions about this whole issue. All of it negative and some of it angry. Carolyn comes so close so many times to telling Kate about what secrets she’s uncovered in her genealogy. Then Carolyn has the opportunity to save a life that’s someone very important to Kate and who’s become special to Carolyn as well. Finally, Kate explains her own take on family and then everyone understands why Kate doesn’t want to dig into her genealogy. This book is beautifully written and so deeply affecting. I highly recommend it. It is being released Thursday, March 5, 2020.

Nothing grips me more than family drama...unless it's mysterious family drama!

"The Disharmony of Silence" by Linda Rosen delves into the tangled webs of secrets and resentments spanning generations. In 1915, Rebecca Roth severs ties with her lifelong friends, the Pearls, but when her son falls in love with Lena Pearl, a truce is formed. Sort of. Fast forward to 2010, where Carolyn Lee, wishing she had a family to share drama with, uncovers a mysterious connection between her mother's brooch and a painting in her childhood home. As Carolyn unravels the truth, she must navigate the potential to unravel lives or find the solace she desperately seeks.

I love Rosen's ending--and definitely recommend this read!

What is family to you? Carolyn seeks family connections, only to be confronted with the destruction family secrets can cause. Great food for thought.

I enjoyed the book until almost the last chapter and then the F bomb blew up in my face and ruined a good story. It was totally unnecessary and disappointing. I will not recommend this to anyone or follow this author for that reason.

I really enjoyed this book and I love the title. It is perfect for the story. I won't give any spoilers, but Carolyn wants to know more about the picture of the woman who was hanging in her mother's dining room. This woman had become a confidante to Carolyn because she told the woman in the painting many of her thoughts growing up. Carolyn decides to look up the painter and gets to know the painter and finds out who the woman in the painting was. The book goes back and forth from the 1920's to the present. Carolyn learns more about the woman in the painting and learns family secrets. Will she tell them to others or keep them secrets? Read the book to find out!

Fascinating conundrum, and one I've struggled with myself - if you suspect a family secret, do you try to ferret it out? And, if you know a family secret that no one else does, is it yours to tell, even decades later?
Carolyn, in the present day, begins this book determined to find out the answer to a mystery. As she gets closer to the secret of almost a century before, she needs to weigh the effect of its revelation not just for herself, but for the rest of her family.
Full of period detail of early 19th-century New York, and modern-day California, the novel had me turning the pages to find out what Carolyn decides. I couldn't predict the ending, which I always like in a book, yet it felt like the right one.

The Disharmony of Silence is a fast-paced, multi-generational novel whose main plot centers around solving the mystery of the origins of a unique cameo in a painting. The novel examines the themes of grief, loneliness, and friendship, questioning the meaning of what makes a true family. The characters of Carolyn, Kate, and Ben are well-drawn and fit nicely into the present-day story. Lena, Jack, and their mothers form a fascinating counterpoint in the "origin" story, as well as a believable look at the complicated jealousies confronting many immigrants at the turn of the century. I read this quickly, getting involved immediately and staying with it until the satisfying ending that confronts the responsibility of the holder of genealogical knowledge. A compelling look at the long-term, life-altering consequences of family secrets.

This story was amazing. 2 families torn apart by pride and hurt feelings and yet somehow brought back together years later. Not everyone knows the whole truth but in the end does that matter? Family isnt always about blood. The only reason gave it 4 stars is because the ending felt abrupt to me.

I liked the idea for the story, but grew weary of the protagonist's wrangling with the opinion of other characters who disagreed with her. It also was too long, and the ending was disappointing and abrupt.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not sure I would re-read

I started to lose interest about halfway through. It was a decent story but once you figure out the twist, the rest of the book is spent thinking "where is this going?" There was a lot of back and forth with the main character that was overly repetitive in my opinion. I feel the book was ended in an odd manner. Not bad, but not sure I'd read it again.

In 1915 Jack and Lena begin their relationship in secret, due to a family fall out. Eventually the couple become clean and when Jack and Lena marry. A true is called.

Meanwhile in the present. Carolyn mother is poorly. As she begins to sort her mother's belonging out. She stumbled across some questions about her family history. A secret... She cannot ask her mother so it's time for Carolyn to do some detective and find the truth.

This book is brilliant. The chapters change from past to present. Which is one of the things I love about it.
I feel like I'm kept on the edge of the seat, trying to figure out the family secret.

The author builds up a great story and I
found myself reading it in one sitting.

I would recommend this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very good beginning, but it peters out to an unsatisfactory ending
Reviewed in Canada on September 7, 2020
With a title like The Disharmony of Silence you might expect a weighty story with plenty of substance and it sure appears to start that way. Fluctuating between the early 1900's and nearly 100 years later to encompass a century of passing time, we are introduced to some Jewish immigrants from Russia, The Roth family, and The Pearl family who began their journey from Russia as best friends and end up parting company after a disagreement about a business they were originally supposed to open together. Eventually they stop speaking to each other. But like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Jack Roth and Lena Pearl fall in love and marry. Eighty-five years or so later, the daughter of these two is in an old age home near death and her only visitor is her daughter, Carolyn. Carolyn is packing up her mother's house and selling all her possessions as her mother will never be able to return to that home. Amongst her mother's things she finds two items of interest, a cameo broach and a portrait painting which has hung in the dining area during her entire lifetime. The woman in the painting is wearing the distinct broach. Such begins Carolyn adventure to find out who the woman is in the portrait. Sounds great right? So how did it turn into a the end product, a silly book which spends several chapters talking about diabetes and exercise, which should have been fact checked by a doctor for just the errors I noticed after experiencing diabetes in my own family. The beginning is great and promising but the middle and end are slow, tedious and eventually unsatisfying.
