Editorial Reviews

From the Author

In many of Pibbin's adventures, Leeper, that strong, older leopard frog, knows more than Pibbin, and he often helps Pibbin make good decisions. But what would happen, I wondered, if Leeper turned out to be wrong? How would Pibbin feel if Leeper's mistake put him into danger? How would he respond? The issue of forgiveness is universal, even in a child's world, and it comes in many colors.

From the Back Cover

Pibbin's adventures are based on a real place: the abandoned cranberry bogs and ruins of Friendship town, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The forests, rivers, and bogs of the Pine Barrens provided Gloria Repp with inspiration for this series, and she has made many trips to explore them. Check out her website for enriching resource material, including photographs of the beautiful Barrens and frogs like Pibbin and Leeper.

Another charming chapter book in this series which features family and friends of the frogs who live in and around Friendship Bog. They teach young readers much about life and growing up to be responsible adults. In this adventure, Pibbin accompanies Leeper and Riff to check on Leeper's Uncle Zee. When they arrive, they are dismayed to find Captain Zee is the brutal leader of a captive worker colony of frogs who must wait on the dictator hand and foot. Pibbin is imprisoned and forced to find beetles, carry water buckets and search for orange ants. When Pibbin attempts escape, he is captured but Riff manages to evade Zee and eventually drops Pibbin's carpenter saw into his hole. Pibbin finally escapes, but not without thinking about how to rescue Leeper. An adventure ensues as they meet friends and foe on the trail back home to Friendship Bog. What lessons do the heroes and villains teach their young readers? Will they all be safe in the end?

These chapter books are great for early readers because they contain large size text and some colorful illustrations to make reading easier and more entertaining. Great read aloud discussion choice or even chapter by chapter as a bedtime story for younger readers. Recommended for readers in grades two through six.

One would think you could find a glorious adventure in the abandoned cranberry bogs and ruins of Friendship town. Will Pibbin make a mistake when he follows the advice of his old friend the leopard frog Leeper? Leeper has convinced Pibbin to travel with him to his Uncle Zee's farm. Pibbin's trust in his dear friend is shattered when they arrive and are suddenly taken captive by the farm's overseers to work the bog under the demanding and tyrannical Captain Zee. Toss in an evil queen and you have an adventure that will keep kids 7+ enchanted and rooting for the little guy. Will there be redemption for Leeper for his extremely poor judgment? Kids will not only love the adventure, but will learn why freedom is everyone's ultimate goal.

Pibbin and Leeper are two frog friends who live together in Friendship Bog. Together, the two friends embark upon some daring and exciting adventures.

There are fifteen brief chapters included in this book. It opens with a small graphic that includes the pictures and names of the book’s characters, so children can refer to them when needed. In my opinion, this was a good feature, since there are several characters (nine) to keep track of. However, reading it in eBook format makes it difficult to switch back and forth in order to remember who is who. I wondered if children might get confused when trying to recall a particular character.

There aren’t many illustrations, but those that are included are nicely detailed. I read the book first on my Kindle Paperwhite, and found the illustrations were a nice size, but were in black and white of course. I then read it on my phone – the illustrations were colorful and lovely, but overly small. These things make me think it might be a story better read in print, or at least on a Kindle HD.

The stories are cute, and full of action and adventure. The listing states it’s suitable for seven year olds, but I’d classify it as being for slightly older children. Despite these things, I’d have to say that Trouble with Zee is worth the read.

I was having a bad day. I sat down and read this book. Now I am not sad anymore. The characters are just like us. They worry, get scared, and feel like there's no way out. But they find out they can be brave and loyal and help each other out of their troubles. I felt like I was right there with them all the way.

Pibbin finds himself in deep trouble after listening to his friend. He tries to escape but finds he can't without leaving his friends in trouble. Will he be able to use his best tool, his smarts, and save himself and his friends? Read this exciting story to find out.

This is a wonderful chapter book for emerging readers. It's exciting but easy reading, has a message and kids love it. It would also be good as a read aloud.

"Gunkety-gunk! I like ants.
Red or black, they tickle my tongue.
They're crunchy and munchy and lots of fun.
I like ants! Gunkety-gunk!"

New to Pibbin? Meet the main characters featured in this story at the beginning of this chapter book. This story (#6) opens with Pibbin and his best friend, Leeper, eating ants. Riff comes along with a message for Leeper. Marteena, a mouse who live in Fox Woods, says that a cousin of Leeper's is looking for him.

Who is Leeper's cousin? Tatter. Why is Tatter so nervous? Who is Uncle Zee? According to Marteena and Carpenter, Zee is not a very nice character. Leeper wants his friends to come with him even though Tatter tries to dissuade him. What do the critters find at Uncle Zee's new farm? Where is Tatter's brother, Teeny?

Having received the valuable advice of "the best tool you've got is your smarts" how will this help Pibbin as he and the others find themselves in a very unpleasant situation. What will loyalty cost him? (Warning: Parents be ready to answer questions on slave labor as you read this one to your child or they read it to themselves.)

Keena, the lizard, is back. What mischief is she up to this time?

There are 15 short chapters in this well-written book that also contains some fabulous illustrations. Don't miss the photos of real frogs like the ones featured in the story at the end. Book received in exchange for my unbiased review. These stories are clean, uplifting and an easy way to teach our children great values. Highly recommended. Thanks, Liz
