About the author
Erin McDermott was born and raised in New Jersey. She graduated college with a bachelors degree in History. If she's not in her room writing, you may find somewhere on the Jersey Shore with her family. She has been writing stories since 3rd grade. She decided to finally take the plunge and finish her first book, CAPTIVE REBEL (The Allegiance, Book 1).
During her years in college she expressed a deep interest in Greek Mythology, which she incorporates into both The Allegiance Series and The Athana Chronicles. She is incredibly grateful to her family for supporting her throughout the trials and tribulations of the independent publishing process.

This is a teen/young adult urban fantasy book with witches, vampires, and werewolves. The setup is interesting and the story certainly follows a breakneck pace. The action starts almost immediately and doesn't let up. I found it kind of hard to follow along at first because the author is throwing so many things at you without context or explanation, so you kind of have to struggle to keep up. Ironically (or perhaps intentionally) I felt exactly like our heroine in that regard.
The story is well written and our characters are interesting, although I would have liked them to be developed a bit more, with more depth and backstory. Perhaps we will get more of that in future books. Overall it was a fun weekend read.

I received a free ARC for review purposes.
Since this is a short read (under 200 pages), the book is quickly paced. We find ourselves diving into a kidnapped mystery with the main characters grieving over the year-long struggle of their mother's disappearance. After being stuck inside all year, they finally take a camping trip signifying their return to society.
Of course, this is a bad idea as we can see the foreshadowing beginning to reveal itself. Then the main character is pulled into a world that she least expected.
I will say that the writing hooked me in right away. Even though there is a bit of predictability with the plot, I still found myself surprised when everything is revealed by the end.
I liked the paranormal history between the species and the unique twists they exhibit in the story. But, I will say that the middle of the book can be repetitive in the sense that she is constantly battling going to sleep and the main love interest's reassurance that he's going to keep her safe. It felt like a few of the chapters were on repeat minus a few plot changes in the mix.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. It appears to be a solid start to a series. The romance is a bit clique, but I loved reading the connection they had with each other. What can I say, I'm starting to warm up to romance.
The ending leaves a huge cliffhanger that I hope is expanded upon in Book 2. Who's alive? Who's really dead?
A great YA fantacy that grabbed my attention right from the beginning and held it to the end. I only wish I had the sequel to have been able to keep reading.
Sophia is a teenager who has spent the last year grieving with her brother and father, following the disappearance of her mother. Her father has kept the children at home to protect them and ease their fears. Now is the time to "get back to normal" so they go on a camping trip. But during the night Sophia is abducted!
Captured by a fallen angel who wants her dead, then rescued by a werewolf whose whole purpose is to keep her safe, Sophia is overwhelmed by being introduced to a world she knew nothing about. To add to her confusion and insecurity, she discovers that she herself is a moon witch, just as her mother was!
Sophia only wants to return to being a normal girl in an ordinary life. But Finn, her werewolf rescuer only wants to keep running to keep her safe. And the fallen angel just wants her dead!
The plot unfolds at a quick pace that keeps you so intrigued and ends with only the thought of "I need the next page....I need the next book!
I do appreciate reading books that are not filled with cursing, detailed sex and descriptive violence. So as an older adult I turn often to the YA genre. Thank you.

This isn't the first book of Erin's I have read and honestly, her work just keeps getting better & better! Her story telling is impeccable and I don't think I've read a book so fast!
Sophia Ballance's story really began when her mother vanished, and with it, a truth that she would soon discover. A secret that would put her in the hands of a werewolf who was insistent on running to remain out of danger & keep her alive as that was his purpose. Yet Sophia wanted to go back to her less complicated life.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sophia's perspective and felt every word. I was hooked from the first chapter, with the bond to her family sweet to read. And as soon as the action hit in, I was there with Sophia, experiencing what she was. I loved being a part of her journey and discovering who she really was.
If you're a sucker for werewolves, witches, spells, adventure & a fierce heroine, this book is for you!
