There is a sickness here passed down through ancient lines, one noted and deeply felt by Sylvia Massey, the new psychologist. What is wrong with nurse, Belinda Sully's, son? Why did her husband take his own life? Why are the old people in Temple Lake Nursing Home so terrified? And what are the lawless inhabitants of nearby Wolfs Cross hiding? It is a dark village indeed, but one which has kept its secrets well. Burdo, the white monk, will infest your dreams....This is pure occult horror and definitely not for the faint of heart...'

This is a story that involves a tragic and horrific mixture of parallel lives balancing on the edge of reality in both the here and now and the afterlife. Whilst the story takes place in the present, I felt at times I had been swept away to the dark ages.
I won’t give any spoilers, but one scene left my stomach turning and my emotions twisted in angst for one of the characters as she faces the reality of the terror now unleashed upon her family. This book is full of strong visuals and the atmospheric and poetic prose will pull you in and keep you committed to the very last page.
900 years ago, Monkspike have a horrific event and still today the residents are still feeling the impact.
This story didn’t concentrate just on one family as the whole village were affected and throughout the story, you learn how the past event is affecting the families. Sylvia Massey is married to the local psychologist and whilst she believes in modern medicine she also believes in the old ways. Brenda Sully is coming to terms with loosing her husband, moving to a smaller house and trying to get to the bottom of her teenage son’s strange behaviour. Kezia Elwyn came from a trouble family who wanted something different and thought the dark would help her get it.
At the beginning you are introduced to all the families and start to get invested in their lives, so when things start to happen, you want to carry on reading. Flitting between the past and the present., However, the story does not get confusing you get to see what happened on that fatal night and the how they are now seeking revenge. As soon as the evil starts the story has a creepy feel to it.
This was an good read that had enough creepiness to keep my interest. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am glad I have other books by this author on my kindle as I am looking forward to reading more.
Sarah has completely out done herself with this book and as always delivers to the reader and the imagination.
Each book of hers I read, it gets better and better and the details get more detailed which feeds the need to want to know and read more.
A great job as always and look forward to what comes next. A well deserved 5 stars but would give more if I could. Well done.
The village of Monkspike looks like a typical English village from the outside, but the sickness infects everyone and runs deep - any new residents get swept up in it too, which is what happened to Mark and Sylvia Massey. Then there are Belinda and her son Ralph who are even more affected...and Kezia, playing with fire.
So many layers to this story and all of them terrifying! This book took me a little while to get into and I was a bit confused in the beginning but then the rollercoaster began and I will never look at little English villages the same way again.
4.5 stars from me.

Monkspike, a small forest village, is haunted by its own history. 900 years ago, the monastery in the forest was the scene of a gruesome massacre. Every last monk living there was murdered, beheaded, and their heads stuck on spikes - hence where the village got its name. But that's not where it ended. Burdo, the White Monk, former Abbott of the monastery, is still hanging around, and he is really pissed!
This story revolves around a family, who have moved to Monkspike to start a new life; a local family who have suffered the tragedy of a suicide; and a local woman, involved in the dark arts of witchcraft. What happens is a story of revenge from the grave, evil spirits and evil people, and the struggle of good.
I loved the characters. They were very well developed, with just enough backstory to give some understanding to their motives and mentality without taking away from the present situation. There were a few extra characters who really didn't play a big part, but that was ok. The only negative I can really suggest is the ending. It didn't really wrap things up for me and left me with a few questions. Having said that, there was also a little tidbit of mystery left over, giving the author the option to continue into a sequel, although not essential. Overall, a great read, with a good amount of chills.

Set in the picturesque village of Monkspike, this is a chilling tale of the past never resting, 900 years of dormant secrets simmering in the depths of hell, evil permeates the air, every breath taken weakens the soul, spirits, restless seeking revenge.
Sylvia Massey is new to Monkspike, a psychologist with a spiritual soul, she soon begins to notice not all is well with the residents of Monkspike, sickness seems to be everywhere, with no logical explanation as too what ailment it can be. Nursing home residents who are too petrified to sleep at night,so many questions, with no answers, Sylvia decides to start researching some of the village folklore, as she delves deeper she is plagued by a horrific vision of a ghostly monk in her dreams. kezia is a practicing Satanist, Burdo the White Monk has been released from his dark festering prison, 900 years of pure evil unleashed and no one is safe. The author has a rare talent and for me is The Queen of Occult writing, her research is meticulous, every detail has its importance in delivering a chilling and frightening read, characters are well written, all interwoven with their own part to play in this dark and atmospheric tale, beware, on turning the first page this is a journey into a dark realm, not for the faint of heart, but absolutely recommended!..

What I really enjoyed about this occult horror has demons, witchcraft, possession and is laced with a back story over a 1000 years old that continues to haunt not just one person, but a whole town.
A good story with a big cast. One of my favourites being the creep Burdo - a white robed Monk (the one on the cover).
Definitely worth a read.
