Tinsey Clover is smart. She’s brave. Also, she can’t carry a tune to save her life. Oh yeah, plus she's an elf the size of a chipmunk. When her bizarre magical power grows in and makes her feel like a total outsider in her own village, Tinsey sneaks into the forbidden forest on a journey to find someone more like her. From trolls to dragons, what she discovers along the way challenges everything, and everyone, she thought she knew.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This genre of child-appropriate fantasy is a popular one, but rarely are the underlying issues explored so sensitively and entertainingly. All of the fantastical elements are delivered in a matter-of-fact manner, in such a way that children's imaginations are easily engaged. The upshot is that Tinsey learns, gradually, to embrace "the other." The book is full of laudable lessons but steers clear of preachiness..."- BookLife Prize Review

Great fast paced story
This was a cute little tale about a courageous elf who figures out that the world can be so much more than it is. I loved the variety of characters and overall fast-paced storyline that makes this a great read for middle schoolers and more.

Tinsey Clover turns out to be more than just an elf the size of a chipmunk. She’s spunky, brave, loyal and very wise for her age. There are so many important lessons in this book and not just for children. Chelsea Flagg’s characters are believable, kind, cooperative and willing to see the big picture. This book goes beyond teaching inclusivity, courageousness, and what it means to be willing to go beyond one’s limits. It’s a great lesson in forgiveness; that just because you don’t agree with someone or approve of their actions, family is still family (singular or tribal) and deserving of help. For Flagg’s debut children’s novel, I give her an A+ for story line, charming and well-developed characters, snappy dialogue, and scenes that pull the reader right into the story. I bought this book for my granddaughters, 5 and 9, but I’ve decided to keep this for myself and get them another! Looking forward to the next Tinsey Clover adventure!

I get to do the review because I read this to my 5 year old :) The themes and messages about family, friendships, bravery, vulnerability were all a pleasure to share and completely approachable and connectable for my 5 yr old. We had some good conversations in the middle of reading. The characters were fun and real and vulnerable and brave and so creative and appealing to envision in our minds. Cliffhanger chapter endings kept my daughter super engaged. Dialogue was realistic and made us both giggle often.

This middle grade fantasy novel is easy to read and blends a deep meaning into a well-crafted story. The story centers around Tinsey and in her world, her people keep to themselves and don't interact with anyone outside their community. Like most middle-grade stories (and one of the reasons for a lower rating as this trope is all too common), Tinsey is eager to explore the larger world. On her adventures she meets other magical creatures and discovers the world is a far different place than what she previously thought (based on what she had been told by her community). The author does a great job creating a wonderful world filled with different and detailed magical creatures. Overall, the novel has a quick pace and is easy to read making this story more of a younger middle-grade story.

There is nothing my 12 year old girl and 9 year old boy love more than cuddling up for a great read-aloud book before bed, and Tinsey Clover was a book that bridged their age and gender gap--and was also great fun for me as an adult as well! Tinsey is a fabulous, adventurous character who is a great role model for kids. She lives in a world chockful of fun details and whimsy that you wish you could go hang out there yourself for a few days! I highly recommend this book for all ages. It's a fun and meaningful (there is a moral to this story--but it isn't beaten over your head) ride! I can't wait to see what Ms. Flagg writes next!

As a 85 year old grandfather with eight grandchildren, I really liked this child’s book! It realistically tells three very real stories simultaneously.

As its first story line, it uses the language typical of its 11 year old heroine, Tinsey Clover, who is a tiny elf, as she emerges into a typical young adult, but always as a tiny elf. Hence, her name is “Tinsey.” And she is tiny, being no larger than a small “Clover.”

As its next story line, tiny Tnsey experiences many of the real issues that a child all-to-often actually experiences with her family at that age. This includes what her family wrongly believes about many other people ...but wrongly based on what the others look like, where they live, or how they express themselves.

And the third story line is about how the many very different young persons she meets as she emerges into her adulthood not only become her good friends but also bring together their formerly distrusting parents and even their villages.

My 8 year old son loved that book, and wanted to write his own review :)
"I thought that Tinsey Clover was a wonderful and charming story about a little elf no bigger than a chipmunk.
I never thought that any little forest elf would have so much imagination and courage! It is far more than a cunning story, it is a magical story. You can tell the author has lots of imagination! In other words, it is a wonderful story.
With many, many compliments" -Sky (8 years old)

This middle grade book is an adorable tale featuring a kind and plucky lead named Tinsey Clover. An elf the size of a chipmunk, Tinsey feels isolated in her community, keenly aware of not fitting in with the other elves. After developing an unusual (and funny) magical power, Tinsey decides to set off on an adventure, hoping to find a community that really feels like home. Her adventure leads her to meet many interesting and sweet magical folks, including the charming troll Judder (one of my favourite characters). Her travels cause her to realise that the world is a very different place than she once thought it to be. While this novel is a breeze to read, it’s also clearly thoughtfully constructed as the author has threaded surprising reveals throughout the plot to keep readers consistently engaged. Flagg writes in a fun, easy to read style and this story would be particularly well-suited for reading aloud to young readers. Such readers are sure to enjoy the many enchantingly cute creatures featured in Tinsey Clover.

There’s one true rule when it comes to children’s books. Children are the hardest critics. Never mind how deftly the writer pieces together a magical journey or fills it with amazing creatures. If it doesn’t stimulate the child’s mind, the parent wasted money. This is not so with Chelsea Walker Flagg’s tale about Tinsey Clover, a miniature elf that learns to use its magical powers. Flagg creates scenes that are just as comfortable as the reader’s home. This book will become a true heirloom to pass down through the generations. Parents will truly love to read this magical story to their children, as it becomes a bedtime ritual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, perfect for kids looking for a longer read

Tinsey Clover is a fantastic little book that is perfect for young readers who are preparing to read chapter books, or as a book to read to your little one. The characters are well written, and the reader learns a little something through each stage of Tinsey's adventure. While there is some fighting it's not particularly violent. Tinsey's relationship with her brother Aspen is wonderful and will show the reader that even if you are very different you are still family.
This is a welcome addition to my home library and I will be sharing this with my daughter very soon.
