You Can Do It! (Tales of the Five Enchanted Mermaids) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

"I can't do it!"
How often does a parent hear that during their kids' childhoods?

It is so frustrating and painful to hear those words from your child. The best way a parent can help is to equip our kids with tools they can use to break through this negativity and develop confidence that they have the skills to solve life's big and little challenges.

This is why we created the Tales of the Five Enchanted Mermaids books. Each of the five mermaids represents a different area of emotional intelligence and, through these stories, they present practical solutions that your child can carry with them and use in their own lives.

In You Can Do It! Otto the octopus works through his frustrations as he learns to use blocks to build a house, with assistance from the mermaids. Each mermaid helps him tackle one aspect of the challenge and come up with several possible ways to solve it. The format of this book acts as a conversation starter and makes it easy to transition into a real world discussion about additional solutions your child may have.

With the book's charming and lighthearted illustrations, you and your child will know exactly how Otto is feeling as he works through the process and then eventually reaches a successful outcome.

You Can Do It! is the first book in a series of mermaid books for children 3 to 7 years of age. If you and your children like unique stories that help develop emotional intelligence and a growth mindset, you'll love these books.

Lois Petren, author of the Lulu and Lainey and Five Enchanted Mermaids series of children's picture books, became an author by chance when she realized she had a story to tell. Creative inspiration occurred during 2015 when, after returning from a family vacation, Lois discovered that she had left behind a ball of yarn she needed to complete a knitting project. This became the inspiration for writing "Lulu and Lainey ... a French Yarn," which is the first book in the Lulu and Lainey series. Five additional books followed.

In 2018 in collaboration with LifeMadeSimple, LLC, Lois started writing books about the Five Enchanted Mermaids, a diverse group of mermaids with magical powers who help children to develop a growth mindset and learn developmental skills.

Lois has had successful careers in marketing, fashion and retirement services. She lives in Southern California with her husband and children.

When she is not writing she can be found knitting, cooking, or planning her next vacation.

My little granddaughters are waiting anxiously for Book Number 2 to become available, in the meantime I want to comment on how much we enjoyed Book Number 1 and Otto's story. The story appeals to a wide age range, our 3 1/2 yr old loves listening to the story, and her 6 and 7 year old cousins love reading it to her. Young children love collecting books and toys about the same character, whether it's Clifford or My Little Pony, and now, thankfully we have The 5 Enchanted Mermaids! This makes birthday and other occasion shopping very easy, so count us in and thank you very much !

Cute book that breaks down theory in a way that kids can understand and provides practical tips to help them overcome tough feelings like anxiety, frustration. My only want would be for a non mid drift bearing mermaid.

This was a delightful tale about an octopus learning how to accomplish what he sets out to do; with the help from five enchanted mermaids. My 8-year-old daughter loved this book. She enjoyed being able to read it on her own and the lessons that it taught. My 5-year-old son enjoyed the pictures as well. The pictures went along with the lessons as they were taught. My daughter liked the mermaids and is looking forward to seeing them again.
I received a copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This was my first book from the 5 Enchanted Mermaids, and I can see their widespread appeal. They are sweet with their advice and colorful and vibrant in the illustrations. They are appealing to girls as well as boys. The story was pitched to where the younger kiddos will glean great info and the older ones will glean even more. As always, listening/reading is the most fun you can do to find out what I'm going to tempt you with in just a moment. Keep reading. It's coming right up. Right down below. Yup, right down there.
Otto was mad and sad. He wanted to make a castle out of plastic blocks at Miss Molly's School. He didn't know how. So he turned red and yelled at his friends and threw the blocks. Then he was sad. As he went home the five Enchanted Mermaids swam along. They stopped to give him a hug. First he turned to Anna who is kind and patient. Easier if you can be kind and patient with yourself. Then asked Sophie, bu, learn honest and truth. If you knows what scared you you can fix it. Then they showed Otto a few ways to help him out. Then he went to the other three. I'm going to let you explore what they said and what they helped him learn to do. Tempt you yet? I tempted myself. I'm going to go read it again.

Its a nice book but a bit wordy for kids so it makes them tune out. Could be a bit more simplistic and to the point. The mermaids tell "kids/children" how to like themselves. I usually change that to kids and sea creatures ... being that they are under the sea talking to an octopus. But the lesson is taught to be patient with yourself and have confidence and that is always good. One other thought, the illustration of the Asian mermaid needs to be less angry looking. Love that they are diverse mermaids... genius to make materials for kids that are multicultural and vibrant, just wish she looked a bit more positive looking.
