It's got a nice cast of characters that fit well with each other, and their chemistry makes it easy to connect with them. I quickly found myself rooting for and against various characters throughout the story, changing my allegiances as the story developed. Having this kind of dynamic connection to the characters made the story fun for me to read.
The pacing of the story made it engrossing. The author did a great job painting a serene picture to show the status quo for her characters. Just as I got comfortable with how things were, she channels Jackson Pollock and flings new paint over the picture, forcing her characters to rearrange and adjust before developing a new status quo. After sharing in their anxiety during the tumult, I would eventually relax and find comfort in their new normal. But then a new twist brings on new challenges, and we'd all have to readjust once more. I was surprised at how invested I became in these people and in this story. It really made it hard to put down.
As a final thought, this book avoids a problem that plagues many movies and stories. In too many stories, drama and tension are fabricated because the characters refuse to talk to each other to clear up a misunderstanding. After one person runs away in tears, the other hopelessly calls after them "No, wait, I can explain!" and I roll my eyes in disbelief. If this story had that element to it, I couldn't have gotten through it. In Worth Losing, the drama and tension comes from the fact that the characters DO talk to each other. While there is some deceit involved, the characters are willing to confront each other and have difficult conversations in a believable way. This keeps the story grounded and makes the people in it feel real.
Like I said, as an outsider to this genre I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it!
Friendships, secrets past and present and a forbidden romance collide in Worth Losing by Linda Van Meter. Delaney and Cheryl are part of a trio of owners in a wine bar called Peace of Wine. They are also best friends . When Cheryl invites Delaney on a family vacation, she is hoping a love connection will be made between Delaney and Cheryl’s newly divorced brother. A love connection is made, but not the one that Cheryl intended.
It now appears that Cheryl’s best friend, 42-year-old Delaney is involved with her best friend’s 29-year-old son, Sam. Keeping their relationship a secret puts a strain on the workplace as well as their friendship. This strain leads to revelations of secrets both past and present that threatens the life they have always known.
Worth Losing is a family drama and steamy romance set against a backdrop of sandy beaches and a trendy wine bar. The characters are well developed . They are three dimensional, possessing positive traits and potentially tragic flaws just like the people we know and meet every day. I found myself completely engrossed in the storyline, hoping that the characters would find a happy ending.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. On a cold, snowy, Ohio day, a trip to the beach and a wine bar was an entertaining and fun escape.
