"Peppered with twists and secrets, Petals will hold readers' attention to the last page." -- Library Journal Review
Some memories refuse to stay buried...
On Christmas Eve, a car accident leaves Carly Perez without a mom. A year later, Carly's life is nearly back to normal -- except for the fractured images that plague her dreams.
When her father insists on spending the holidays in Guatemala with relatives Carly's never met, she is less than thrilled. But she reluctantly boards the plane anyway. That's where she first sees the man with the scarred face. She could swear she has seen him before, but when? Where?
In Guatemala, Carly meets Miguel, her attractive step-cousin, and thinks maybe her trip won't be a total waste after all. Though she is drawn to him, Carly's past holds her back -- memories that will not be forgotten, and a secret about her mother's accident that is hidden in her subconscious. And everywhere she turns, the man with the scarred face is there, driving that unwelcome secret to the surface.
Petals is a YA suspense novel that will keep you turning pages.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LAURISA WHITE REYES
1. What did you most like to do when you were a child?
The same things I enjoy doing now - reading and writing. I wrote my first poem when I was five. It just came to me in the middle of the night. I got out of bed, fished a scrap of poster board from my trash can, and scribbled it out with a crayon. Growing up I wrote poetry, short stories and plays. I used to coax my brothers and cousins into performing them for our parents. And I have always been a voracious reader.
2. When you were a child did you ever have a moment when you decided that you were going to be a writer when you grew up?
I think I was about fourteen when I knew I wanted to be an author someday. I set a goal to publish my first novel by the time I was thirty. I overshot that goal by thirteen years, but I finally did it.
3. What books influenced you most when you were growing up?
My favorite series for years was the TRIXIE BELDEN MYSTERIES. I still have the entire set of books in a box in my garage. Some of my other favorites included ROBINSON CRUSOE, OF MICE AND MEN, GONE WITH THE WIND, WUTHERING HEIGHTS and ROOTS. Heavy duty stuff for a kid, I know, but I loved them. Still do.
4. When you went to college, were you already pursuing a writing career?
At first I actually wanted to be a geneticist. I lasted five minutes in my first genetics course and promptly changed my major to English. I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to write. After college, I spent the next thirteen years writing for magazines and newspapers, but the deadlines finally burned me out. Six years ago I quit all that to focus on writing fiction, which was what I really wanted to do all along anyway.
5. What gave you the idea for THE ROCK OF IVANORE?
I've always enjoyed reading to my kids at night before they go to bed. When my oldest son was about 8 years old, he asked me to make up a story instead of read one. So I told him about an enchanter's apprentice who botched his spells. Each night my son would tell me what he wanted to hear that night, whether it was dragons, or magic, or sword fighting, and I'd weave it into the story. Eventually I started writing it down. A year later I had a completed manuscript.
6. How did your life change when you got married and had children? Did it make it easier or harder to find time to write?
My husband and I have been married almost twenty years now. We have five children ranging in age from 18 down to 4 years. When my oldest child was small, I'd sit her on my lap, hold her steady between my elbows, and type on the computer at the same time. Later, as more kids came, night time was my time. Most of my writing was done between 10p and 2am. When my babies woke in the middle of the night, I get up to care for them, and then stay up an extra hour to write. But I was younger then. Now that I'm older, I'm tired. I can't stay up past eleven or I fall asleep at the computer. So now I work in the morning before my youngest child wakes up. Once he's up, my writing day is over. The rest of the day belongs to him. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
7. What other hobbies do you enjoy?
I do have a few other hobbies, though I do them sporadically. I enjoy digital scrapbooking (I don't have the talent or patience for traditional scrapbooking). I do a lot of family history and have traced my genealogy back to seventeenth century New England. I also have a passion for ancient history, something I inherited from my father who knows pretty much everything about it. I also inherited my love of writing from him. He has written several amazing novels himself, and now that he is retired is finally making time to pursue publication.
8. When is your next book going to be in book stores?
My first novel, THE ROCK OF IVANORE, will be (was) released on May 15, 2012. The sequel, THE LAST ENCHANTER, will come out sometime in 2013. There may also be a young adult paranormal in the works, but that is still up in the air.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017This talented author helps the reader see, in vivid adjectives, Guatemala and California. The book is suspenseful, well written and so very interesting. I honestly did not see the end coming. The author takes on some heavy themes - loss of a parent, and the torn feelings a person with two heritages might feel. White Reyes did her homework especially with the Guatemalan history and traditions. I loved how she added Spanish phrases. It made the well developed characters seem real.
The teenage Carly Perez was in a horrible car accident where she lost her mother on Christmas Eve. Her father tears her away to Reu, his small hometown in Guatemala to visit family just before the first anniversary of that accident. Carly is mad about being uprooted and resented her father's seeming lack of compassion. The world of a cold winter in her California home is the opposite of Guatemala and she is sure that she will be horrible. Carly soon warms up to Reu especially when she meets her step-cousin, Miguel.
The mystery starts in the airport and continues throughout her whole trip. She knows her father has secrets about why he has not seen his family in Reu for decades. She knows that her nightmares are too much for her to take. She knows that a scar-faced man is everywhere she is. What she doesn’t know will change her forever. Who is the scar-faced man? Why is he stalking her? Can Carly and Miguel find the answers that seem buried in her nightmares?
The way the author describes the family and the grandmother’s home is amazing. The story is so well written I liked that every item mentioned in the story adds to the mystery and is explained by the OMG ending. I would recommend this story to everyone. I look forward to reading other stories by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2018This is a great look at loss, guilt, and finding yourself. Carly's story rang true to me. I wanted to read this book because we stopped in Guatemala on a cruise, and I wanted a better look at the culture. I got that, but I also got a good story and some great writing. The "mystery" in the story was exposed and solved in at a natural pace and in a believable way. On top of everything else, this is a story of blended families both in the usual sense of step-families but also in the sense of blending different cultures. It's a great read, and I think teens would relate to both Carly and Miguel.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2017A beautiful young adult coming of age story with a rich cultural background and a thrilling surprise twist. Carly doesn't want to go visit her relatives in Guatemala, but on the one year anniversary of her mother's death, her father decides it's time to meet the family. The setting is bold and brilliant, a weaving of images and traditions that sing to a reader's senses. I felt like I was in Guatemala as I read Carly's tale. It was fun to read of holiday traditions from another culture and observe things from Carly's point of view. Everything from the town of Reu to the jungles and old Mayan towers is brought to life by the author.
The character of Carly herself is well voiced and developed. She is a typical teenager, but is dealing with a horrible tragedy. She struggles to find her way in this new world where her mother doesn't exist and her memories of the event are dark and horrible. She constantly sees a strange man, "raisin face", everywhere she goes, and these meetings bring on panic attacks and black outs. Who is this man? Why is he following her? These questions will pull you through the story and keep the tension high. The unveiling at the end is both soul wrenching and cathartic.
I really enjoyed this read. I highly recommend it! 5 Stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2017I enjoyed reading Petals by Laurisa White Reyes. Carly the main character in the story is a likeable teen with a hidden past. I liked finding out who the scar faced man is and how he fits in to Carly's past. I didn't see the ending coming. It was quite a surprise. A little bit of innocent romance adds a nice touch. I loved learning a bit about Guatemala and it's people and traditions. I highly recommend this book. No Smut just good reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017If you’re looking for an emotional, yet intriguing read, look no further than Petals. I love Laurisa’s writing.
Carly is a girl traumatised by an accident which killed her mother. She has been plagued by vivid dreams. When her father takes her back to his home country of Guatemala, Carly is reluctant. But she soon changes her mind when she meets the mysterious Miguel.
There’s a deep mystery surrounding the small Guatemalan town as well, and this mystery, and the chemistry between Miguel and Carly, as well as Ms Reyes’ fabulous writing will keep readers hooked until the very end.

I felt for her struggle with her coping with her mother's death and can imagine it would be helpful for teens who have experienced loss to read this.
