House Without Lies (Lily's House Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 5,275 ratings

Her Dream Didn’t Include Falling in Love

Lily dreams of a big house, a place of refuge for runaway girls. She knows what it’s like to grow up feeling unloved, and she now fills every space in her tiny apartment with endangered teens. They don’t have everything they need, but together they have enough.

Or so she thinks—until she meets Jameson and glimpses the mysterious something between them that just might mean real love. Jameson, who works as a teen counselor, believes the only way Lily can really help the girls is by certifying as a foster parent and going through the system. But becoming legitimate may mean losing some of the girls to the families who threw them away, and Lily hasn’t worked hard to save the teens only to abandon them now. It seems Jameson will be one more entry on the very long list of things Lily has given up for the girls. What other choice is there when she is all they have?

When two of the teens’ fathers come looking for them, and another one’s mother plans to put her daughter in danger, Lily’s life spins out of control. They need a new home—and fast. A safe place. A house without lies.

Editorial note

House Without Lies is a clean, contemporary romance with a satisfying ending (no cliffhanger). Feel-good, romantic book that lifts while at the same time addressing serious issues and deeper family connections. You will love Lily and her girls! There are sequels that tell the stories of other characters connected with Lily’s House. As one reviewer says, these are "Ideal for fans of Robyn Carr, Mariah Stewart, Sherryl Woods and Susan Wiggs."

Editorial Review

"Readers seeking inspirational women's stories with a broader focus than relationship-building moments will find House Without Lies just the ticket. It's filled with many different characters and diverse circumstances, but the overall plot holds true to its intentions and presents a vivid story made all the more immediate by Rachel Branton's choice of using the first person to capture Lily's daily life and feelings. Lily's accustomed to fighting for others: can she fight for herself, as well? An engrossing read, it's also a pleasure to add a note that while House Without Lies is part of a series, it's actually a fine stand-alone story that neatly concludes its plot. Readers will want more, but won't be required to hang off a cliff waiting for resolution – and that's a huge bonus to the first book in this series." –D. House Without Lies is a good read. It is well written and edited. The story is of a young woman who follows her dream of helping homeless girls. Lily, who had grown up in an affluent home, is looking for love and giving the love that she feels she never had growing up. She has been accomplished enough to go to school on academic scholarships instead of using her family's money. Finding homeless girls is her passion and she meets a like minded handsome young man who helps her fulfill her wish of becoming approved for foster care. Many rules of the foster system are bent in this book to make it work out for each of the girls. Parents are portrayed as either abusive or weak, or in the case of Lily's parents, distant and unaware of the true nature of Lily's personality, passions or needs. Lily considers herself saved by her older sister who stays mostly in the background and helps when needed. Lily also has a friend who has rescued a baby brother from her drug addicted stepmother. As a retired social worker, the back story of each girl is believable to me. The situations work out well for the most part and the story ends on a happy note. It is a story of good triumphing over bad, which is most every social worker's dream and hope. Things almost never work out this well or smoothly in the real world but it's a wonderful escape.

A pleasure to read about Lily and her girls as this young women collects stray girls she wants to help. Her desire to make the world a better place is heartfelt. How wonderful it would be it more of us had a desire to help those in need. Very hard to read about the abuse the runway girls experienced but it
will remind us their are many in need of help.

Lily has a dream of a future with a house filled with love and family, unlike the mansion she grew up in with her sister, Tessa. She has devoted her life to helping homeless girls even if it means putting her education on hold or living hand-to-mouth. She has no time for relationships until she meets the cousin of a young grocery clerk who has been helping with expired groceries. Mario Jamison Perez is unlike any man she has met before. Like Lily, Jamison wants to help and volunteers at a non-profit for troubled children. Unlike her, he comes from a large, loving middle-class family.

The storyline weaves a story about the lives of neglected and abused children and the dangers they face. The chemistry between Lily and Jamison is undeniable but Lily’s commitment to her girls is more important than romance. The plot could be very dark at times. The book is well written and the characters were realistic and believable. I enjoyed reading it and would like to read other books in the series.

I loved this story. This story was something very different from anything else I've read before. It was clean, well written and edited.

It was also very riveting, and filled with so much love and compassion for kids that needed a champion to fight for them, in a time when they needed it the most. Lily was that champion for all of them, and more. She protected them, fought to keep them safe from harm. She fed them, clothed them, put a roof over their heads, and went to the mat fighting to keep their abusers from ever getting their hands on them again. But most of all; she loved them all. And she did it all by sacrificing her own wants and needs. Mario was another definition of a Hero, at least in my book.....and Lily's, too, for that matter. He stood by her side through both the good times, and the bad.

This may have been my first book by this author, but it won't be my ladst!

Lily loved helping young abused runaway girls. Her lifestyle did not fit her wealthy parents plans so they were in conflict. Her only help and hope came from friends and her sister until she met counselor Jamison at Teen Remake. They became a team protecting these poor girls from the system that often favored the abusive parent(s). Full of love and friendship that was plagued with fear and threats, they became a close knit mixed group that fought for each other against all odds.

For the most part, this is a pretty good book. The writing is straightforward and clean, and the editing is well done. The story is interesting and flows smoothly, and the characters are varied. It has enough that I should’ve liked it; but I couldn’t because I am so tired of the overbearing parent cliche.

I’ve seen it so many times before, sometimes humorously, and its purpose is to make the parent into the antagonist. The us verses them. The parent verses the child. And in this case, the capitalist verses the humanitarian. Of course, the readers must side with the humanitarian daughter who only wants to live her own life. Surely they recognize that all the rich parents care about is money, so they must be in the wrong. Right?

Ah well. It would have been nice to see the daughter grow up and see her parents as human beings. You have to remember that in first person POV, everything is filtered through the narrator. Everything the parents say, everything they do, is filtered through Lily. We're fed a continuous stream of her perceptions; and right up to the end, she still interprets her parents' words and actions through the eyes of a teenager. She’s in the right, they’re in the wrong, and she really hopes that one day they’ll admit it.

I can see why some might like this story, but I’m giving it three stars for its tired cliches and lack of growth in the protagonist.

Lilly had help somewhere runaway girls by taking the in of the streets. Each had their own horrible past. Lilly met Jameson a cousin of her and girls who help out with groceries. Soon Jameson and lily became more than friends he helped her out with the girls even getting them help and Lilly a job. The author has everything in this story line upset anger romance disappointment and frustration when things go wrong and one of the runaways is given back to her abusive father. Jameson and Lilly fight to get her back, they decide to visit but her father attacks them and finds that Elsie has run away again. Upset and angry they leave to look for her . They find her hiding in the park she has been attacked by her father and is covered in bruises. Jameson contacts his colleague and she inturn brings the police in the meantime Elsie mother come to give much needed evidence against Elise's father. She is really united with the other girls. Jameson asks Lilly to marry him and they buy a run down house to fit the ever growing foster kids. In some places in this book I ended upset for the girls especially when Elsie was taken back by her father. This book keeps you reading highly recommended people to read this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Book of survival not really romantic.
Reviewed in India on January 28, 2019
I find this book is more about survival of vague lily (main female character) than a romantic story. While reading i was more afraid about what they will eat next day than being excited about the next romantic scene. This book is more about managing ur budgets in tight financial situation than reading romantic fantasy or lovers relationship.

3.0 out of 5 stars perhaps a bit overly dramatic?
Reviewed in Germany on April 29, 2019
I do not know enough about Child Protection Services in the U.S.A. to say if the occurrences in this book were realistic or not, but they did seem a bit unrealistic and made-to-fit to me. The same feeling applies to the main protagonists, Jameson and Lily, who seemed younger in their behaviour and actions/reactions than they actually were.
The plot was a good one, though, although again a bit much on the unreal side - Lilly single-handedly initially saving all those young kids, later with the help of Jameson; Bea seeming to bend all rules to make this possible, and give Lilly the legality she needs, and other incidents.
The love story between Lilly and Jameson - again, very fast, all doubts and problems solved nearly instantaneously, like a miracle, or a fairytale.
And still - something in this book drew me in and kept me reading, I just wanted to know how she solved all the problems with the kids.
On the whole, although highly unrealistic in my opinion, a likeable and well written story. And yes, I would like to get my hand on more in this series.
