The stunning conclusion to The Celtic Cross series. In the aftermath of the hotel bombing where they had gone to lead a peace rally, Mary sits, shattered, in a hospital room beside the broken body of her beloved Gareth. In an effort to distract her and pass the long hours, Philip reads to her from the final episode of his family journals.
In 1914, in spite of her family’s skepticism, budding actress Nora Armstrong is thrilled to join the Gaelic Revival movement at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin under the leadership of the indomitable Lady Gregory. Nora loves her new life until everything is changed by the Easter Rising. Northern Ireland is born out of the rubble of the conflict, but can the uneasy peace be sustained?
Old Wars; present conflicts. Out of her pain Mary finds real hope for the future—changing peoples’ hearts.

Donna Fletcher Crowe's characters catch your attention and affection at every turn. Their life situations are often tinged with heartache or tragedy, even as our lives are. In this final installment if the Irish story, Mary and Garrett are working hard to bring healing and reconciliation to the two sides of the issue. However, outside forces are working to continue and escalate the fight. How will these conflicts affect Mary and Garrett? What cross will each one bear to bring about the result they were called to strive toward? This climax brings us face-to-face with the realities of what war can do and the resilience of the faith God gives His people.

I’ve followed this series with bated breath. Donna Fletcher Crow never disappoints! This ending to the series moved me to tears (while standing in line at the drugstore!) I love the rich history, the endearing characters, the faith element, and real life struggles in this series. Thank you Donna!

When I read Donna Crow, I expect excellence and “The Dawning of Peace” was no exception. It was a page turner that I could not put down. I actually read it twice because the first time was too fast! The maps, genealogy, and glossary are a bonus! Truly instructive for church history in spite of being historical fiction.
Although it is the last book in The Celtic Cross Series, the book can easily be read as a stand alone novel.
In North America today we have almost no experience of the devastation of war. We hear the horrendous stories of far away places and unknown peoples, but can’t truly empathise. Donna has brought these experiences vividly to us. The violence of the factions in Ireland was something I never imagined and under the banners of faith and religion!
The characters are so real, you feel like you know them and share their emotions as they go from day to day. Even those totally innocent and uninvolved struggle to survive and even to understand. Moreover, among those who only want to help to bring peace there’s much misunderstanding. Their faith is their only hope in such troubled times.
The surprise ending was an eye-opener—it was so real and recent. “Bomb” was just a word in my world at that time. But it is so real—death and birth, love and sorrow, family and faith—nothing has changed. As Donna concludes, we must pray for peace. I closed the book with the words of an old song running through my mind: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me!”
    Highly recommended!

In 1914, will Nora Armstrong help inspire Ireland to peaceably become an independent nation? In 1996, will Mary and Gareth survive a bomb attack? In 2022, should we expect things to continue in society without cataclysmic change?

This is the final installment of Donna Fletcher Crow's 10 part Celtic Cross series. For those unfamiliar with this collection, there is a story of a couple in the 1990's which runs through the series (at the beginning and end of each book). Additionally, each volume tells a historical story: The first four parts focus on Scotland, and the following six deal with Ireland.

If you have not read the rest of the series, I would strongly advise that you start at the beginning, mainly so you can follow the 1990's story.

This story deals with what could be called a Civil War, covering most of a century which includes times of violence. Donna Fletcher as usual has characters you can care about, laugh with them in the good times and cry with them in the not-so-good times.

To me, the struggles in this story resonate because I feel there is the division here in the 2020's that there was in this novel. The lessons learned by Nora in the WWI era and Mary in the '90's are ones we will need to deal with as well.

I received a free copy of this book from the author for my unbiased review of this book.
