The Devil's Glove: A Spellbinding Historical Novel of The Salem Witch Trials Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 715 ratings

"This review is not enough to remark on this astounding, dazzling, and immersive work of pure literary genius... Without a doubt, the very first line... the very first paragraph... all the way to the last two words of the book will send shivers down your arms." – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Highly Recommended” award of excellence from The Historical Fiction Company

Northern New England, summer, 1688.
Salem started here.

A suspicious death. A rumor of war. Whispers of witchcraft.

Perched on the brink of disaster, Resolve Hammond and her mother, Deliverance, struggle to survive in their isolated coastal village. They're known as healers taught by the local tribes - and suspected of witchcraft by the local villagers.

Their precarious existence becomes even more chaotic when summoned to tend to a poisoned woman. As they uncover a web of dark secrets, rumors of war engulf the village, forcing the Hammonds to choose between loyalty to their native friends or the increasingly terrified settler community.

As Resolve is plagued by strange dreams, she questions everything she thought she knew - about her family, her closest friend, and even herself. If the truth comes to light, the repercussions will be felt far beyond the confines of this small settlement.

Based on meticulous research and inspired by the true story of the fear and suspicion that led to the Salem Witchcraft Trials, THE DEVIL'S GLOVE is a tale of betrayal, loyalty, and the power of secrets. Will Resolve be able to uncover the truth before the town tears itself apart, or will she become the next victim of the village's dark and mysterious past?

Richly Developed, Takes you to another time
One of my favorite things to read is realistic historical fiction. The kind that can draw me into a time and place making me feel like I am experiencing everything of that world first hand. Lucretia Grindle has done just that in The Devil's Glove. She transported me to the early colonial days of New England in a small Puritan settlement of less than 100 people. She painted such a vivid picture of not only the land but also of the Puritan settlers whose strong beliefs, superstitions and past traumas had them living in a state of fear. This fear paired with jealousy and gossip created a powder keg of tension just waiting to ignite. For ten years Deliverance Hammond and her seventeen year old daughter Resolve have been living in Falmouth. As a natural born healer, Deliverance is often called upon when someone is injured or falls ill. Her skill and knowledge have been enhanced by the years she spent living with the natives during the time of King Philip's war. Now as Deliverance is suffering from an unknown illness of her own, she still feels duty bound to help her neighbors in need. Even when it's the same neighbors that whisper her name. Resolve and her mother share a strong, yet unspoken, spiritual bond. In the summer of 1688 a series of events will unfold that will both strengthen and sever these ties. Resolve will begin the summer as a child, but by its end she will be facing her future as a woman.Book Quote: "I think of the sour smell of fear, of the quick fumbling movements it begets, of its broken voice. Of how fear parses out those it seizes, weakening their minds, setting them apart like a fever or a pox. And how, like a fever or a pox, it is contagious."This book is the first in a series about Salem. Although this book does not take place in Salem, what it does is give a rich and detailed explanation of the main character Resolve Hammond. Not to be mistaken for an overdone prologue, this story is a phenomenal tale of life in an early Puritan settlement. Grindle creates an eerie, tension filled ambiance as she explores the fears, mistrust and dangers of life for the early settlers. Some readers may be in a hurry to get to the witchy world of Salem, but I loved being wrapped up in this small village surrounded by the wilderness. I look forward to the next installment in this series. I would recommend this as a top read for fans of Historical Fiction.I was gifted an advanced review copy of this book from Book Whisperer and the author. This review is my honest opinion and I am leaving it here voluntarily.

This is a very intriguing story centered on one small New England village peopled with traditional and non traditional characters during the time when witchcraft was seen behind every door. I loved the character of Resolve as she discovers her special gifts and the path she is to follow and finds out how brave she is .The recounting of how her mother has healed and nutured so many
was very satisfying as well as the focus on Native American
lore as it bumps up against the Puritans' iron fisted rule. The author has certainly done her research and educates the reader through both fascinating and morally bankrupt characters that you wish to know more about. I recommend this book to anyone interested in witchcraft and the New World as well as those who enjoy a multilayered story about
those individuals who have the power to see into other worlds while living in this one.

The story grabbed me from the first chapter. I was not able to put it down and was fortunately able to read straight through and finished it in two days. I can only hope that the line on the cover, “Salem Book One “, means that a book 2 will be released soon.

Now for the editing. I would say that on average, there was a grammatical error in every 3rd chapter. Because the story was so incredible, it would not keep me from recommending the book. But such a good read surely deserved better attention to detail.

The story is good but parts of it were difficult for me to understand going into the thoughts of the character. I wish there had been more of a segue between the events and her thoughts or visions.

I loved being swept away in the narrative by this author. The language is poetic, but easy to read. The characters run deep, and are so realistic. The complexities of the time period come through with great success. It is a beautiful read. The thrilling story, stories within the story, and the non stop excitement, made for a five start review from me.

I am hoping there’s a sequel. The end of the book was left very open; so many threads not woven tight enough.

I did enjoy the plot-line and hope the author writes more of each character. The descriptions and feeling emoted on the pages were phenomenal.

Deliverance and Resolve - heartbreaking how they had to hide so much of what they knew, for fear of being deemed witches. And, how difficult and unfair the Native Americans were treated as well. I liked how the narrative combined healing, friendship, and respect between this mother and daughter and the Native Americans. The writing is descriptive and melodic. I was caught up in the beauty and tragedy of this New England town and her people.
The cover says 'Book One' and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

An interesting novel that only seemed to squirt around the Salem witch trials. It was more about a mother and daughter who were different from the people in the Village. The father trying to save them during an Indian War placed them with an Indian tribe he traded with. The mother learned about healing herbs and medicine to help with child birth. The townspeople whispered the mother was a witch until they needed her to help heal them. In the end the mother left the daughter. The townspeople felt she had drowned herself they were glad she was gone. The daughter went to live with family friends in Boston . Where they were already having witch trials. There was also a young child that had lost her family except for her drunken father. She ran around the village by herself. Listening at the windows of the townspeople , the girl and her mother. She latched onto the girl because she wanted someone to love just her and felt the girl would love her. Her name Abgail . She promised to follow. Susanna to Boston.

"The devil's glove" (Salem book one), Lucretia Grindle, edición en inglés.
