The Brooding Duke: A Historical Regency Romance Novel (Regency Expedient Marriages Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 674 ratings

"Scarred, monstrous, reluctant, brooding" is what society calls him, but he's just a kind-hearted Duke who avoids messing with the ton because of the harsh judgment of his scars. No one gave him a chance to prove who he really was... except her, his convenient bride, the first one not to run from his scarred face.

The battle-scarred face of Russell Johns, Duke of Amesbury, sends ladies running. Resigned to a lonely bachelorhood in his decrepit castle, he’s pessimistic about an arranged marriage with the daughter of a marquess. They’re strangers, and he’s sure his disfigurement will repulse her when they finally meet. She rejects him, yet claims it’s not for his scars, but because she wishes to marry for love. Russell has one month before the wedding to change her mind and win her heart.

Lady Caroline Richardson was the indulged daughter of a marquess, until her twin brother, the heir, was killed. Then, she became her father’s pawn in an arranged marriage to a Duke she’s never met. True, the Duke isn’t the dour monster she expected but powerfully attractive, his scars a badge of valour. How to convince him they’re not the reason for her rejection, that she’s simply holding out against a loveless marriage?

With one month until the wedding, she must fight against her own resolve not to fall for him. But will she succeed?

*Read a romantic book that mixes Regency-era love, mystery, and strong emotions. "The Brooding Duke" is the perfect novel for people who like passionate stories set in the past.

No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a happily ever after full of romance.

I liked everything about this book. I thought Caroline was right to be so angry when her father forced a marriage on her. I was glad to see themselves finally fall in love. I love the dowager duchess. It was such a lovely get together at the end. This book brought tears to my eyes.

Really liked this book. The characters were very well drawn and the plot was perfect regency romance. However, I found typos and mistakes all over the place in this book so I down graded my rating from 5 to 4. It's a shame because Ms Sheldon is such a talented writer, love her stories!

I wish the proofreading had been more thorough. While the storyline was interesting and unusual and the characters throughly likeable and original, I wish the grammar, punctuation, and parts of speech had been attended to more thoroughly. Misspellings and incorrect parts of speech, as well other grammar issues interrupted my enjoyment of this story far too often. But it is a wonderful story, full of interesting and honorable characters, and I know I will read it again. And maybe again.

I did not really like the story, I did so want to but it just did not happen. I could not empathize with the heroine.

A sweet love story that has two characters butting heads. Neither want to marry. The young lady decides to turn the Duke away from her, but ends up falling for him because of his patience and kindness.

    Watch the proofreading.

Sweet story. Well developed characters. But what happens to Lydia? And why was the dukes mom always tired? Just a couple loose ends.

Enjoyed this story very much nearly made me cry in places, was very good story, I would recommend this tale to anyone who does not want to read all the sleazy details with sex, and just wants a nice clean story with a nice ending.

Russel and Caroline's story touched my heart, since there is so much truth to be found: how can a country send soldiers to war and expect their heroes to come back without scars? How can anybody expect to find happiness in a loveless marriage? Both protagonists have a lot of convincing to do in order to give them both a chance at their well deserved HEA together.
