Can one girl free a kingdom from the king’s curse?

Adopted Colleen never fit in to her realm, and an aching in her soul tells her there’s somewhere she truly belongs. But when she uncovers part of her elfin heritage and scrambles through the megalith following the persistent draw, she’s not prepared for the world she encounters.

The king has cursed the people into believing he’s God—not a god,
the God.

Now, she’d give anything to return home. To safety.

But the real God who is being impersonated doesn’t call her to play it safe. There’s an antidote. Some are already free and want to free everyone, and they need her.

In this world where little is familiar, will she turn her back on everyone, including God? Or will she risk her life for strangers?

If you enjoy strange worlds where nothing is as it seems—with doomed elves, deceptive fae, playful dragons, and other unusual creatures and gadgets, in a so-called utopia wrought with mental warfare—join Colleen in this Christian steampunk-fantasy mash-up, the first installment of J F Rogers’s Cursed Lands trilogy.

This story gripped me from the very beginning, with Colleen under the table protecting several other young children and praying for God to hide them from the vampiric fasgadair.
Fast forward 12 years later, and she's crawling through a megalith into the world she actually comes from, where her father - an elf - is king over humans ensorcelled into believing he is God.
I enjoyed following Colleen on her journey of self discovery with her shape-shifting dragon, watching her make mistakes, grow in her faith, and struggle through the challenges her new life in this world throws her way alongside her new friends and allies. The worldbuilding is fun and new twist on elves and fae, the characters, are loveable, and the internal conflict Colleen faces with regard to her father is poignant. The love between them is real, and yet she can't accept or condone what her father has done to the people. She and her friends have to take down the king, but she wants to save him too. And through it all, God is there, protecting and guiding Colleen when she bothers to listen. Because like anyone,, doesn't always listen and trust as she should.
I would recommend this book to young and adult readers alike. It's moving, heartwarming and wholesome and gives glory to God. We need more fantasy like this. On to the next installment, because although it has a great resolution, the reader is kinda left on a cliffhanger. Which is okay, in my opinion.

A half-elf accidentally hatches a dragon, who is sometimes a cat and sometimes a dog. That dragon is absolutely my favorite character, though there’s a pooka who’s pretty cool too. It was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading #2.

JF Rogers is one of the few authors writing today who successfully integrates the Christian faith into a fantasy world. This is no mean feat! Plus, there are a host of fascinating characters, fantastical creatures (I especially love the shape-shifting dragon), plot twists galore, and even a hint of romance to add some spice. Overall, this is an exciting adventure tale about the healing power of God's love that will stick with you long after the last page.

Colleen found a package and went through a megalith to a different realm. She encounters a lot of characters and unique creatures. She also finds out who her father is and how she became an orphan and what her friends expect her to do. Not knowing who she can trust and what deception is taking place is difficult at times. Knowing what is happening to the people and how she has to lift the curse is intense. But she puts her trust in God which helps her with the situation that is taking place. A great Christian Fiction book which gives you hope.

Some authors are good story tellers. Others are good writers. Very few have the excellence of putting the two together with the excellence of JF Rogers. She is truly gifted in both.

My introduction to her writings was the Ariboslia series. When I finished that series I wanted to do a quick look back through the first of the series to clarify some questions I had. I ended up rereading the entire series The writing style pulled me in.

The King's Curse and the Cursed Lands series came next and the author's excellence continued. I was happy to find some of the characters I'd met in Ariboslia. While the Cursed Lands series stands on its own, it's possible to get more out of it by reading the Ariboslia series first.

I love stories about elves and fae. The King's Curse has both. The band of heros includes a shape shifting dragon, a shape shifting pooka, elves, fae, and humans. The King's Curse begins a grand adventure where the heroes end up running for their lives. It then continues with The Witch's Curse as the stakes increase.

Through all of her writings, JF Rogers expertly weaves a strong belief in The One True God. The bands of heros in both series learn that God has a plan and how to trust in Him through trial after trial. These universal truths are presented in such a way that her readers can apply these lessons to their own lives.
