AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LAURISA WHITE REYES

1. What did you most like to do when you were a child?

The same things I enjoy doing now - reading and writing. I wrote my first poem when I was five. It just came to me in the middle of the night. I got out of bed, fished a scrap of poster board from my trash can, and scribbled it out with a crayon. Growing up I wrote poetry, short stories and plays. I used to coax my brothers and cousins into performing them for our parents. And I have always been a voracious reader.

2. When you were a child did you ever have a moment when you decided that you were going to be a writer when you grew up?

I think I was about fourteen when I knew I wanted to be an author someday. I set a goal to publish my first novel by the time I was thirty. I overshot that goal by thirteen years, but I finally did it.

3. What books influenced you most when you were growing up?

My favorite series for years was the TRIXIE BELDEN MYSTERIES. I still have the entire set of books in a box in my garage. Some of my other favorites included ROBINSON CRUSOE, OF MICE AND MEN, GONE WITH THE WIND, WUTHERING HEIGHTS and ROOTS. Heavy duty stuff for a kid, I know, but I loved them. Still do.

4. When you went to college, were you already pursuing a writing career?

At first I actually wanted to be a geneticist. I lasted five minutes in my first genetics course and promptly changed my major to English. I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to write. After college, I spent the next thirteen years writing for magazines and newspapers, but the deadlines finally burned me out. Six years ago I quit all that to focus on writing fiction, which was what I really wanted to do all along anyway.

5. What gave you the idea for THE ROCK OF IVANORE?

I've always enjoyed reading to my kids at night before they go to bed. When my oldest son was about 8 years old, he asked me to make up a story instead of read one. So I told him about an enchanter's apprentice who botched his spells. Each night my son would tell me what he wanted to hear that night, whether it was dragons, or magic, or sword fighting, and I'd weave it into the story. Eventually I started writing it down. A year later I had a completed manuscript.

6. How did your life change when you got married and had children? Did it make it easier or harder to find time to write?

My husband and I have been married almost twenty years now. We have five children ranging in age from 18 down to 4 years. When my oldest child was small, I'd sit her on my lap, hold her steady between my elbows, and type on the computer at the same time. Later, as more kids came, night time was my time. Most of my writing was done between 10p and 2am. When my babies woke in the middle of the night, I get up to care for them, and then stay up an extra hour to write. But I was younger then. Now that I'm older, I'm tired. I can't stay up past eleven or I fall asleep at the computer. So now I work in the morning before my youngest child wakes up. Once he's up, my writing day is over. The rest of the day belongs to him. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

7. What other hobbies do you enjoy?

I do have a few other hobbies, though I do them sporadically. I enjoy digital scrapbooking (I don't have the talent or patience for traditional scrapbooking). I do a lot of family history and have traced my genealogy back to seventeenth century New England. I also have a passion for ancient history, something I inherited from my father who knows pretty much everything about it. I also inherited my love of writing from him. He has written several amazing novels himself, and now that he is retired is finally making time to pursue publication.

8. When is your next book going to be in book stores?

My first novel, THE ROCK OF IVANORE, will be (was) released on May 15, 2012. The sequel, THE LAST ENCHANTER, will come out sometime in 2013. There may also be a young adult paranormal in the works, but that is still up in the air.

This was a great YA story. There were some dark moments but overall the story was intriguing. I cried, I smiled, I couldn’t put it down. I really hope there’s a sequel. I will admit, I kind of guessed at where the story was going but the journey was worth the read.

This story talks of suicide (the opening scenes are the main character right after a second attempt) and we are taken into Mira’s darkness...but she isn’t depressed, she wants this horrible “condition” to go away. She craves human contact but it’s excruciating for her to touch people skin to skin or for them to touch her as she feels a rush of every emotion, hope, dream, fear, sorrow, and every moment of their life rush in to her at once. Tragedy strikes her soon after she leaves the hospital and she’s left reeling while her mother is in a coma. She has to solve the mystery and she decides to bring David along the journey with her, a boy who went to school with her that she literally ran into at a doctor’s office and at a charity fundraiser ball for her dad who is running for governor. The climax is an absolute thriller. We are taken on an emotional rollercoaster through it. The way it ends leaves room for a sequel but it does have a firm ending.

Content: As I mentioned before, there are dark moments and discussions of how the character wanted to commit suicide and there are biblical swear words periodically in this book. There are a couple of kisses mentioned but no further male/female relations than that. This is a good story that takes a character from darkness into light (at least she holds light in the darkness) and would lead to a good conversation about suicide, depression, loss, etc between a parent and teen. There are a lot of emotions here and it’s quite powerful.

Imagine having to avoid all touch! Being a teen is hard enough without begin able to emotionally connect with people in general, and "family." In the first few pages you learn about her most recent attempt to end her life. The why is explained too, skin to skin contact reveals too much to her, an overload of memories (the sweet, bad and also their feelings about her). From knowing that her boyfriend, "never really loved her," the defection of her "Best Friend,' her adoption, and that the only person she "can't see" when she inadvertently touches him, is her father.

Young Adult, Science Fiction romance with a slight dystopian feel, an interesting twist. All in all, a good read!

"It takes only half a second…

…Like those commercials where a crash test dummy rockets forward at high speed and slams into a wall.
…In that instant, every thought in Emma Lynn Walsh’s head collides with mine—every thought, memory, hope, disappointment and dream.
…I open my eyes to see Dr. Walsh peering at me, a puzzled expression on her face.

“Let—go—of—me,” I order though clenched teeth."

I was hooked at chapter one. I was able to relate with Mira and that is what I like most in any story, when a reader can relate to the main character, or any character for that matter. It gives the story a whole knew perspective when you can.

The book opens with Mari in the hospital after her latest suicide attempt, this time she cut open her wrists. All she wants for it to stop, the memories, the feelings, the emotions, just everything and since she was immunized with the new drug, Gaudium is as only gotten worst.

Gaudium is the new miracle drug, the cure to mental illnesses and Autism. All sixteen year olds must receive the vaccine. I loved the idea behind a drug that eradicated mental illnesses, and how I wish this was real. One dose and your depression is cured, that would be amazing!

The story begins with in the middle of the conflict. Mari's father, the face and CEO of Rawley medical is being accused of running illegal drug tests along with his dead colleague, Gregory Stark. But when Mari's mother starts to question her husband the plot thickens. Fallen into a mysterious coma, she leaves Mari with many unanswered questions.

I liked how the author described what Mari felt when she touched someone, it made a better understanding of why she stayed so far away from people. But does the no touch rule apply to David as well?

I also really liked David's character. He was adorable, I just felt like he went along with what ever Mari said. Like think for yourself a bit dude, maybe she is going to end up almost getting herself killed, stop her!. I liked the romance too, it wasn't forced, it developed through out the book.

The beginning was slow, but that was to introduce everything. Once Mari's mother falls into the coma the book is one thrill ride. There are so many "oh s***!" moments that I lost count by the last page.

My favorite part was that Mari is Hispanic, I haven't read many books with a Hispanic main character. I think I need to look into books with characters of other races as well.

The book is open ended, meaning that Contact could be part of a series *crosses fingers* and we will get to see more of Mari's story. Until I know I am just going to have to wonder what happens next. *sigh*

Contact was a great book. The story starts with Mia trying to hurt herself, and I like how it doesn't take long to find out why, that it get's straight to the point not far into the book. I felt kinda bad for Mia with all that she is having to go through with no answers, the book is so well written that I found myself feeling Mia's emotions along with her.I enjoyed all the characters. The book has just the right amount of detailing and it was like watching a movie in my mind. Contact has everything that I look for when trying to choose a book,it has love, loss,(some)action, mystery and suspense. Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down and reading it was the first thing i'd what to do when I woke up in the morning. This is the first time I've read anything by this Author and I look forward to reading more books by Laurisa White Reyes.
