Fool Me Twice (Ladies of Worth series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 191 ratings

In the gaming hells of eighteenth century London, orphan Caro Worth is leading a double life.

By day she plays a proper gentlewoman on the lookout for a wealthy husband. By night she plays the infamous Angelica, her fictional half-sister with a talent for cards and an ability to finance the life her respectable self has built. An introduction to a rich Marquis brings marriage and security within Caro’s grasp…until the arrival of the unpredictable and totally ineligible Mr. Tobias Felton.

Dismayed by Felton’s persistent appearances, shocking frankness, and enigmatic green eyes, Caro watches helplessly as he comes closer than anyone to guessing her secret, but when complete and utter ruin threatens, she finds that Felton’s suspicions just might become her salvation.

As the walls she has built to protect herself crumble down around her, Caro learns that no matter how careful your plans, life and love have a habit of falling quite spectacularly out of control!

This is the first book in The Ladies of Worth series of Georgian romances. Meet the characters of the Ladies of Worth world from the courageous Caro Worth, to the mischievous Tobias Felton and the wickedly witty Lady Etheridge! Leave the rest of the world to itself for a while and get caught up in drama, humour and romance.

Philippa Jane Keyworth, also known as P. J. Keyworth, writes historical romance and fantasy novels you'll want to escape into.

She loves strong heroines, challenging heroes and backdrops that read like you’re watching a movie. She creates complex, believable characters you want to get to know and worlds that are as dramatic as they are beautiful.

Keyworth's historical romance novels include Regency and Georgian romances that trace the steps of indomitable heroes and heroines through historic British streets. From London's glittering ballrooms to its dark gaming hells, characters experience the hopes and joys of love while avoiding a coil or two! Travel with them through London, Bath, Cornwall and beyond and you'll find yourself falling in love.

Keyworth's fantasy series The Emrilion Trilogy follows strong love stories and epic adventure. Unveiling a world of nomadic warrior tribes and peaceful forest-dwelling folk, you can explore the hills, deserts and cities of Emrilion and the history that is woven through them. With so many different races in the same kingdom it's become a melting pot of drama and intrigue where the ultimate struggle between good and evil will bring it all to the brink of destruction.

I gave this story four stars as I felt it just ended when there was more to be resolved.

The author created great characters that either gain the readers support or ire as intended.

There is suspense and a building of drama that keeps the reader engaged. There is an interesting plot between two worlds that slowly come together.

I also enjoyed the friendship between the heroine and Lady Rebecca.

I look forward to reading the next in the series.

I look forward to more by this writer. The book is a breath of fresh air in this age of churned out romances with their cliched plots, typos, and smut. This book is plot driven with a simply brilliant storyline. The research is exquisite. So many of the historical romances I've read don't have a thread of historical truth to them, with writers making it all up as they go along, not bothering to do any research of the time period. Not so with this book. Keyworth clearly researched the Georgian era thoroughly, using the time period to help craft the story, threading the plot with the rules and expectations of the era. Seeing a Georgian era piece is also exciting since most of the historicals are regency. The writing style is carefully crafted with vivid details at opportune times. We see into the hearts of the hero and heroine, know their fears and desires, and also see the setting without it being over done. While some of the similes felt a little stiff, the style reminded me whole heartedly of Georgette Heyer, which could never be described as still, merely era-appropriate. My compliments to this budding writer. If more readers would shy away from the factory published books and try new writers from small presses such as this, I believe there would be a resurgence in this genre and certainly a strong reader base. This is a gem waiting to be mass produced and on the best seller list. Kudos to Keyworth. I hope she continues to write, as I will be eagerly awaiting the next book from her!

Caro takes to card playing in order to survive. Its what led to her father's downfall, but she doesn't know what else to do. She creates a disguise as an illegitimate half sister to try to keep her positive reputation in society. All works well until she gets distracted by Tobias. He seems to be a wastrel, but turns out to have a heart of gold and a love that is constant for her. Together they fight and bicker as they face a dangerous person who doesn't like losing to a woman. An enjoyable story to read!

Great story wonderful story line great characters. A story with a twist that will keep you reading, is Caro who she says she is, or is
she Angelica or both? One man will discover the truth. That will leave one twin devastated and the other in scandal.
    Thank you ❤️

This is an interesting and very different historical romance. It is well researched and well written, as well as being clean. While there is an attempted rape, there is no pornographic details - just torn clothes, slight violence and then the emotional effects afterwards. No swearing. I liked Tobias. Well, he grows on you... Caro started out well but later made some rather idiotic decisions that were not only annoying, but seemed at odds with her character. I really liked Rebecca and particularly, her aunt. For me, the story felt unfinished. It really needs an epilogue. On a positive note, I liked that there was some consequence for the villain. Too often authors of this genre allow them 'off the hook' so to speak, which I detest. There must be justice. I think many will enjoy this story.

I really enjoyed reading this story! It was not what I expected and I love finding that in books! I loved the writing and the attention to detail! A great story of not only love, but also friendship. This is one of my favorite genres and I'm glad I stumbled upon this story!

I loved the humor and the characters in this book. My favorite is young Tobias. The heroine is strong and unorthodox in her ability to win and survive. I love that the heroine sees worth in her hero, Tobias, whom often disguises his pain of the second son syndrome with humor. One quote that will stay with me: Upon introducing Caro's brother, James to Tobias. James states, "I would more like to make the acquaintance of a dog on the street, and Tobias states, I assure you my paws are cleaner." This was a very chaste humorous romantic read. The story also had a strong plot. If you are looking for a serious dominating male hero, this is not for you. Again if you are a reader against a male dominated - women are property, and a woman's honor must be defended which truly represents this time in history, this book is not for you. If you are looking for a humorous sensitive hero who comes into his own as the man the hero wants to be, proving himself over time, this story is for you.

Cracking good story. Lovable hero, villains you can hiss at, including for a short time, the brother, and of course the excellent ladies. Great fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Degno di Georgette Heyer

I loved this! Didn’t even know modern authors were writing period novels, but I’m glad I found out! This book has some really un-put-down-able moments. I kept thinking “just one more page...” then found myself starting a new chapter! It’s an ingenious premise and has brilliant characters you can sympathise with, love and loathe. I love that the heroine isn’t perfect and her flaws make her all the more easy to relate to.
I’m really glad I’ve found this author, definitely one to watch!
