The wyrm have escaped the void...

Larger than dragons. Nastier than snakes. Terrifying as hell.

They threaten the underwater mer-kingdom of Fomoria... a kingdom of my ancestors... and the city of New Orleans.

But a dragon's curse lingers in my soul... I can speak to these creatures, I can hear their cries.

These wyrm aren’t the real threat.

Something else is coming... something much worse…

Even the wyrm are terrified…

I have to save them, before the Fomorian merlegion destroys them.

Once the voidbringer arrives, the wyrm will offer our best chance to survive.

Can I even tame these monsters?

If not, it won’t just mean the slaughter of the merfolk, or the death of humanity.

It will mean the end of existence itself.

Wyrmrider Ascending is the first book in Theophilus Monroe's The Fomorian Wyrmriders trilogy. If you like action-packed urban fantasy stories featuring badass snarky heroines, or dragonrider stories, you'll love these books. Readers of Monroe's Druid Legacy and Voodoo Legacy have met Joni Campbell before. But no one has ever seen her like this...

Anne McCaffery's The Dragonriders of Pern meets Jim Butcher's Dreseden Files meets Aquaman in this thrilling and action packed urban fantasy adventure.

Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic–informed by religious myths, ancient and modern–that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.

When Theo isn’t exploring one of his fantasy lands, he is probably playing with one of his three sons, or pumping iron in his home-gym, which is currently located in a 40-foot shipping container.

Wyrmrider Ascending: An Underwater Magic Urban Fantasy (The Fomorian Wyrmriders Book 1), my fourteenth read from author Theophilus Monroe. Another well-written & enjoyable read/listen. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Sadie May's narration adds to the enjoyment of the book. I look forward to my next read from this author (Wyrmrider Vengeance: An Underwater Magic Urban Fantasy (The Fomorian Wyrmriders Book 2) now that I know the order to read since the books all seem interrelated. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

    *** NO SPOILERS ***

This is a very good read. Not only does it have interesting characters, a lot of action, humor, a touch of romance, and a clever plot, the author manages to effectively braid together the mythos of several different cultures. It all blended well together. I've read other novels where something similar was attempted but just did not mesh. The author not only accomplished this while including some local folklore. I won't spoil it for you but you'll know it when you read it and if you search online you'll find references to it and the event and lead character responsible.

I enjoyed it and it was good enough to not only hold my interest but add the follow-on books to my "must read" list.

I give it a four and a half out of five stars (rounded up). I had two issues with the book detailed below. You might see things differently and give it five starts straight up. I thought they were significant enough to mention to prospective readers without marking the book down.

This is the first book in the Wyrmrider series, but not the first book following the protagonist Joni and her adventures. So, although readable as a standalone starter, I would have preferred to have been aware of and read the previous books first. There are a good number of instances where events in this book refer to previous events from earlier books. The author did a good job of filling the reader in on what they needed to know to understand things. I just wonder if my understanding or appreciation of things/characters/events in this book might be slightly different because of not having the earlier reads.

I'd also recommend the reader just push the "I believe" button for the explanations of timelines and such. Things that occur in the future of one timeline had already occurred on a different one, and similar.

Aside from those two things, a really good read that I enjoyed and recommend to anyone interested in this genre. I think you'll enjoy it as well.

Wow, how have I never heard of Theophilus Monroe and his stories until now??? Wyrmrider Ascending the first book in The Fomorian Wyrmriders series with main character Joni Campbell, a half mermaid half human. Although this was listed as the first in the series and that you didn't need to read the previous books, I found that I feel like I'm missing some key pieces throughout this book even though they try to make sure you can follow along for the most part. I actually have plans to go back and start from the beginning because I loved Joni and want to see what got her to where she is. Wyrmrider Ascending is full of snarky, laugh out loud humor and puns, lots of actions, a bit of romance and some serious kick butt vibes from the leading lady. I enjoyed this story so much and the plethora of characters and their personalities is amazing. I do wish there was some sort of glossary or cheat sheet to remember what exactly each person/creature is (there are several names for Voodoo and magic users) but other than that this is a fun fast paced booked.

Thank you to Theophilus Monroe and StoryOrigin for a review copy.

Wyrmrider Ascending by Theophilus Monroe is such a wonderful story to read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series that I am so hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fantasy.

But the female main characters constant side thoughts that had nothing to do with the situation she was in, drove me nuts! I couldn't finish it. I wanted to like it, and really liked parts of it. But rambling on dialog that makes no sense as to its purpose is just annoying. Needs a good editor to stay on track.

Amazingly this book is told completely from the first person perspective, no alternate views. Not having read a book in a long time that had so much internal dialog from only one person it threw me a little. The book allowed present to mix with past characters and was interesting as it covered the life of Merlin's Mother! Being young and of this century she has a very modern vocabulary. She uses popular movie references to understand her situation. Also interesting were so many different mystical forces interacting to accomplish one goal. Merlin/dragons-Druids, Marie Laveau/Julie Brown-voodoo, mer-people, there's a long list. It's interesting as Merlin bounces in and out through different time lines showing how he has grown while using his powers to help. I would not consider this fast paced but it certainly covers ground.
