Twisted Fate Paperback – November 16, 2017

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 206 ratings

Capturing the attention of a dangerously sexy fae leader was never part of my plan.

I wanted to finish college, get a job, and maybe find a nice guy to date.

Instead, I end up forced to work alongside the very fae who gets under my skin like no man ever has. I can’t stand him, but I also can’t deny the tension that ignites whenever he’s close.

After surviving my run-in with the fae, I planned to go back to my perfectly mapped future and forget they existed. Silly me, I should have known that silver-tongued Tristan wouldn’t leave me alone.

And maybe I don’t want him to.

But when my brother falls ill to a sickness not even fae magic can cure, none of my plans matter anymore. And before I have a moment to catch my breath, both my life and my heart are put in danger when Tristan’s fae nemesis emerges and forces me to make a terrible choice.

One I don’t know I’ll survive.

A Great, Twisted Story... I Can't Wait for More!

A Great, Twisted Story... I Can't Wait for More!
I'll be honest, I was introduced to Jessi's work through her Charlie Travesty serial that she co-authored with K.J. Sutton and I was hooked. However, that serial is one of her more recent works and I was hesitant to jump into her debut. I've never read a book with fae and I wasn't sure what to expect. But I'm so happy I picked up this book because it gives me faith as an author planning to self-publish myself. While you can tell that this book is one of Jessi's earlier works, I wouldn't say that you can tell that it's her debut. From the beginning, she's found a way to sweep you up in Aurora's story and her life. She's much like any nervous senior in college - anxious about what the world holds after she's out of university. She handles herself very well in every situation she's thrown into - including being kidnapped by the fae. Which is where this story gets its kickoff. When Aurora gets kidnapped by the fae, she's scared like anyone would be. But she's a fighter and it's something we see over and over again throughout the entire book. I like that she can look fear/death in the face and just keep on kicking. It's what we all hope we can do in dangerous situations and it's very relatable. Some people might not see Aurora as a likeable character because of her snark, but to me, that was a breath of fresh air. So many characters are prim and proper, but we never know how we're going to react to tough situations we've never been in before. I like seeing someone who reacts differently. Aurora gives you that exactly. This book also deals with some heavier subjects that aren't of the supernatural variety - and I think Jessi handles these situations very well in her writing. Grief and secrecy can be a difficult thing to write especially has a new author. But she tackled these subjects very well in my opinion.Twisted Fate was a quicker read than I expected. It usually takes me a while to read books because I'm a genuinely slow reader, but this story unfolded so easily that I didn't want to put the book down. This book could probably have used some more worldbuilding on the fae end of things, but I still enjoyed seeing Aurora and her relationship with Tristan develop. It was definitely enemies to lovers and it was fun to read all the banter slowly turn over into something more. I suspect my worldbuilding questions will be answered in subsequent books and I can't wait to see how Jessi's writing grew with the rest of this series. And let me say... that twist at the end had me reeling! I don't regret one little bit picking up this book and I can't wait to read the rest. If you like enemies to lovers tropes, very handsome brooding love interests, and twisty ends, this is the book for you. I don't know how it compares to other fae books, but I'm glad this was my introduction to that world. I'm giving this one a solid 4 stars!

Twisted Fate is Jessi Elliot’s debut novel, following college senior Aurora Marshall as her meticulously planned life is thrown into chaos following an encounter with Tristan Westbrook and the fae.

I love nearly all of the characters, especially Aurora, our protagonist. She holds her own against the fae with her wits, some snark and yet she’s vulnerable and relatable. There’s several characters that have an unfriendly introduction, but I grew to love them as well. The antagonist was the lone exception; Elliot crafted a great villain that I downright hated by the end. The relations between each of the characters were some of the best parts of the book for me, especially as they change as the story continues, with Aurora and Tristan being the highlight of these.

The setting is very vivid and I got sucked into Elliot’s world quickly. She presents a refreshing and unique version of the magical fae creatures. The excellent pacing complements the fantastic plot and was nearly impossible to put down, wanting to read one more chapter until I was too tired to read. The entire story invoked a roller coaster of emotions with various plot twists, especially the ending.

I’m already looking forward to more of the Twisted series!

For being her debut novel, Jessi Elliot sure was able to rope me in from the start, not hesitating to immediately start the action and thrust her protagonist, Aurora, right into her new life.

As Aurora struggles to keep her sanity, her normal college life quickly slips away from her. The fae world is no joke, filled with danger and deceit. Pain inflicts her life from the start, so she must summon up her strength and courage as each new tragedy falls upon her.

Watching Aurora weave through this new world is admirable and her quick-witted comebacks force a smile on my face every time.

Jessi Elliot uses a heavy amount of dialogue, utilizing these exchanges to her full advantage by keeping the pace of the novel brisk, never allowing a dull moment to slip in. When there’s not any dialogue, we witness Aurora’s inner monologue. Her thoughts and confessions, braided in with her strong emotions for Tristan, pull you into the deep recesses of her mind.

And the lust… Oh, the lust… Aurora knows she shouldn’t feel this way about him, but Tristan’s handsome figure, devilish smirk, and quick-witted comments are hard to look away from. They take care of one another, but they also challenge each other, which is a refreshing side of their looming romance.

Although I loved the romantic scenes, with their descriptive wording and their fiery passion, I honestly thought it took up too much of the book. I found myself reading more romance scenes than action. I realize that this is technically a paranormal romance, but I found the synopsis to be misleading as I was expecting more of a storyline with Aurora dealing with the fae world, than her romantic relations. In addition to this, I felt the way her romantic relations are portrayed is problematic, as it seems to focus more on physical attraction, as opposed to an emotional one.

In all though, Twisted Fate was certainly a fun read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and romance and likes to be kept on the edge of their seat, biting their lip in anticipation.

Twisted Fate popped up as a suggested post in my Facebook feed one day, thanks stalker algorithms for knowing I had been googling about books. (No, seriously, thank you I am in love with this book!) I had never heard of Jessi Elliot, or the New Adult fantasy novel she was working on. She had shared a snip-it of dialog between the main character Aurora, and her fae counterpart Tristan. It was sassy and made me laugh. I followed along the few months before the book was published, growing more and more anxious to finally read it. Would it live up to my expectations? I had never followed an author waiting for their book to be published before, so this was very new to me.

The day the book came out I downloaded it and stayed up far too late finishing it, because I couldn't put it down because it was so different than anything I have read before (and I read a lot). See, a lot of novels have points where you go "Oh, I think I know what is about to happen." Which, sometimes is fun but usually it makes reading dull. I can safely say I never had a freaking clue what was about to happen in Twisted Fate, even if I tried to guess I was always wrong and it was awesome. It was like Jessi did it on purpose, emphasizing on certain things to make you think about them in a specific way only to turn and go the completely other direction. It was amazingly refreshing.

Those fun twists literally went on until the last words spoke on the last page, I was stunned with the ending and was already chomping at the bit for the sequel, Twisted Gift, because I needed to know (and still do!) what happened to all of those characters and their lives that I had become invested in. Very few books have actually brought me to tears, and this was one of them. The characters felt so real, they had faceted personalities full of virtues and vices and I felt myself rooting for them to succeed and being legitimately upset at their failings.

There was just so much packed into just 300 short pages, that I couldn't believe it. It was a powerhouse book, and I am beyond excited to see where Jessi takes readers in the next one.

    I’d probably give this 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

I’m getting a bit weary of New Adult Academy Fiction so I nearly bypassed this book but it was recommended in a Facebook Group, so I decided to give it a try, especially as it was on special offer. I’m glad I did.

Aurora Marshall is a bright, witty and driven young woman. She’s in her final year of a business degree and wants to do well in order to get a good job after graduation to help repay her parents’ investment in her future. Her best friend is Allison and they have been room mates since the start of their degrees.

Then at a party she was dragged to by Allison, Aurora is kidnapped by a fae. It turns out that it was a case of mistaken identity, but now she’s seen the fae world it proves very difficult to get back out again, especially as Tristan, the leader of the fae, finds her fascinating.

I really liked this book. Aurora is kind of spiky, which I liked, but she still is compassionate and loyal to her friends and family. She is not happy to have been thrust into this new world in which the fae share the Earth, and is really angry about not being let to live her old life, but she picks herself up, dusts herself off and tries to make the most of it. She is also capable of changing her mind about things, which is seems rare in NA fiction when young people are always so certain about everything.

Aurora’s friendship with Allison is not one way, as Allison has been very supportive and loyal to Aurora over the years, it’s just she has been a bit limited with the truth when she had to be.

Tristan is a dark and complex individual, who seems incapable of setting aside his own desires for someone else, but then he shows how much he gives to his people and you see how much he puts his own desires on hold for others. It takes a while to warm up to the character and I like that there is no insta-love on the part of Aurora.

There are other secondary characters that are all well written and interesting, with a few hints of greater depth that may be shown in future books.

I liked Aurora’s relationship with her family, in particular with her younger brother. Theirs is a very loving and tight bond that warms the heart. Her parents are academics (which helps explain Aurora’s intelligence) but they are also warm and loving. They don’t expect Aurora to live their dreams and they don’t expect her to put them first. It’s nice to see a NA Paranormal book with a character who has a good relationship with her family for once!

It’s a well thought out book with interesting world building and well constructed characters. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be reading the next book to find out what happens next, because this book ends with bang.

Slow burn Enemies to lovers. Reminds me of rhapsodic and twilight. Aurora goes through some drastic changes with a twist of fate one night at a college party that throws her into a modern fae world.
