Lisa Delaney drops out of law school to care for her four younger siblings. She wants to break her engagement to Mike Brennan, a rookie with the NFL. Instead, Mike insists they marry quickly. Moving from rural Massachusetts to Boston, they leave close friends behind and are on their own. Conflicts develop quickly—Lisa always putting the children first, Mike thinking money solves everything, Lisa’s two failures to return to law school. Soon the marriage suffers a meltdown and these two young people have to decide whether to rebuild it.
