Synopsis:
Reverend Jessamy Ward is taking up the role of the parish priest on the island of her birth after being away for forty years! She answers questions from her nieces about what she remembers about this eccentric place that doesn’t have cars but does have a large colony of feral cats. As she reminisces she recalls what happened when Queen Elizabeth II came to visit the island as part of her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977. We are introduced to the Wesberrey Angels, or rather Jess, aged eleven and her best friends Sam and Karen. They talk about Jess’s older sister and her new boyfriend, the skater boys Karen hangs out with and the move to senior or ‘big’ school in September. The next morning at school assembly we are introduced to their teachers. Mr Leybourne and Miss Sykes have been discovered kissing and their friend Adrian is enjoying the fame of being their discoverer – until Mr Leybourne catches him and gives him the ‘slipper’. Adrian is trouble but level-headed Sam is starting to see him with new eyes, much to the confusion of her friends. So, when Adrian is suspected of stealing the artwork that the parish council plan to present to the Queen, the girls are keen to find out what really happened.
