Description
After fleeing war-torn Hungary as a child, fourteen-year-old Sarah Spirer struggles to grow up in 1920’s Columbus, Ohio. She navigates her strict Orthodox family and makes friends (and enemies) at school, all the while striving to become “American.”
A whiz with numbers, Sarah takes an after-school job at a grocery store. Though she triumphs in a school play and joins an exclusive girls’ club, tragedy is never far behind. Her beloved uncle dies in a tragic accident. Her parents’ divorce. Her boss’s daughter, a German immigrant herself, presents Sarah with a terrible dilemma that threatens both girls’ lives and forces Sarah to make a painful decision that brings her one step closer to being truly American.
